As we have seen, radio waves can be excellent candidates for interplanetary communication, due to the fact that our galaxy is transparent to them. The problem lies in properly identifying the origin – artificial or natural – of an arriving signal. When we tune a radio receiver and we turn the antenna toward the cosmos, we gather hundreds of different signals. Even some of the natural signals are quite suggestive, and one can be tempted to consider them emissions from other civilizations.

This work presents a new methodology that faces the problem of accurate identification of location and abundance of clouds in multispectral images acquired by space-borne sensors working in the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) spectral range. Cloud screening and multitemporal unmixing of MERIS FR data

The operational use of MERIS images can be hampered by the presence of clouds. This work presents a cloud screening algorithm that takes advantage of the high spectral and radiometric resolutions of MERIS and the specific location of some of its bands to increase the cloud detection accuracy. Moreover, the proposed algorithm provides a per-pixel probabilistic map of cloud abundance rather than a binary cloud presence flag. Quantum Phase Slips in one-dimensional Josephson Junction Chains

We have studied quantum phase-slip (QPS) phenomena in long one-dimensional Josephson junction series arrays with tunable Josephson coupling. These chains were fabricated with as many as 2888 junctions, where one sample had a tunable weak link in the middle. Measurements were made of the zero-bias resistance, $R_0$, as well as current-voltage characteristics (IVC). The finite $R_0$ is explained by QPS and shows an exponential dependence on $\sqrt{E_J/E_C}$ with a distinct change in the exponent at $R_0=R_Q=h/4e^2$. Can fermion-boson stars reconcile multi-messenger observations of compact stars?

Mixed fermion-boson stars are stable, horizonless, everywhere regular solutions of the coupled Einstein-(complex, massive) Klein-Gordon-Euler system. While isolated neutron stars and boson stars are uniquely determined by their central energy density, mixed configurations conform an extended parameter space that depends on the combination of the number of fermions and (ultra-light) bosons. Lattice and electronic contributions to the refractive index of CuWO4

We report an investigation of the refractive index dispersion and anisotropy in CuWO4 by means of interference measurements in two extinction directions from mid infrared to the visible region of the energy spectrum. The analysis of the refractive index dispersion yields ϵ(∞) = 4.5(1) for light polarization parallel to the c-axis and ϵ(∞) = 5.3(1) with respect to the other extinction axis. In addition, we report reflectance measurements carried out from the far infrared to the near ultraviolet to study the lattice and electronic contributions to the refractive index of CuWO4.
