Il Museo dell’Università. Dalla Pinacoteca della Regia Università di Palermo alla Galleria di Palazzo Abatellis
2016
Scattering loss analysis in PMMA WGM micro resonator from surface irregularities
2021
The following work shows new ways to analyze PMMA WGM micro resonators, that have irregularities, which acts as scattering centers. The scattering analyses could be used for integration into sensor systems and corrections of existing experiments.
Insect Immune Evasion by Dauer and Nondauer Entomopathogenic Nematodes
2021
The immune response of animals, including insects, is overcome by some parasites. For example, dauer larvae (DL) of the obligate entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) Heterorhabditis and Steinernema can invade insects, evade their defenses, and cause death. Although DL were long assumed to be the only infective stage of nematodes, recent reports suggest that L2-L3 larvae of facultative EPNs are also capable of killing insects. There are no studies, to our knowledge, about the role of nonimmunological barriers (the exoskeleton and its openings) in avoiding infection by DL and L2-L3 larvae, or whether these larval stages evade the host immune system in the same way. The objective of this study wa…
Whispering gallery mode resonator sensors referenced to saturated absorption lines in rubidium atoms and a fs frequency comb
2019
Optical Whispering Gallery Mode Resonators (WGMR) can be produced by many methods, for example, by flame melting of silica fibers [1], by polishing of crystals [2], by optical lithography, by solidifying transparent materials, or using commercially available microspheres. They confine light by the total internal reflection and do not need mirror coatings. A part of radiation is traveling outside the WGMR as an evanescent wave and it is used for sensing applications. WGMRs are becoming increasingly popular as biosensors [3] when their surface is covered with antibodies to provide selectivity. Advantage is that light circulates in the resonator and interacts many times with a few molecules at…
Quality Factor Measurements for PMMA WGM Microsphere Resonators Using Fixed Wavelength Laser and Temperature Changes
2019
The whispering gallery modes (WGM) resonators are based on spherical objects, which are made from optically transparent materials, and are capable of maintaining circulating optical waves, inside the sphere, using total internal reflection. If there is a monochromatic light source which supplies the sphere with a constant intensity, the wave moving along the perimeter of sphere starts to constructively interfere. In this case the resonance happens, which is called whispering gallery mode (WGM). The current work explores the possibility of using temperature changes to measure polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) WGM microsphere resonator quality factor (Q) and thermal expansion parameters. Differe…
Back-scattering of whispering-gallery-modes resonances of cylindrical microcavities: Refractometric applications
2009
Whispering-gallery modes (WGM) resonances of microcapillaries are directly compatible with microfluidic systems and have demonstrated its suitability for refractometric applications [1]. Microcapillaries with a submicrometric wall exhibit very large wavelength shifts as a function of the refractive index of the liquids that fill the inside of the capillary [2]. The spatial separation between the surface where the total internal reflection takes place (the outer surface) and the sensing surface (the inner surface) where the wave interacts with the analyte is a unique property that can be exploited to deal with analytes with a refractive index higher than that of the capillary [2].
Refractometric sensor based on whispering-gallery modes of thin capillarie.
2009
Whispering-gallery modes resonances of submicron wall thickness capillaries exhibit very large wavelength shifts as a function of the refractive index of the medium that fills the inside. The sensitivity to refractive index changes is larger than in other optical microcavities as microspheres, microdisks and microrings. The outer surface where total internal reflection takes place remains always in air, enabling the measure of refractive index values higher than the refractive index of the capillary material. The fabrication of capillaries with submicron wall thickness has required the development of a specific technique. A refractometer with a response higher than 390 nm per refractive ind…
Turkish women writers in English translation
2011
The present paper aims to present a brief survey of Turkish women writers in English translation. Due to the dominant position of English, Turkey has been rather dependent on translations from this language and the flow of translations into the opposite direction has been quite slow. Yet, there is a considerable increase in the number of translations from Turkish into English especially since the 1980s. This also holds true for the works of women writers, and, of women’s fiction in particular, which is closely related to the bond between writing and women’s increased consciousness. The paper also briefly touches upon issues such as what has not been translated and why, and the role translat…
However, his literary production started with Orestes, a play inspired by the legend of the Atreus. Thus, we aim to take a closer look at this work through the perspective of the classical tradition.
