Pa…
Oxidative Stress and DNA Damage in Human Gastric Carcinoma: 8-Oxo-7'8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG) as a Possible Tumor Marker
2013
We characterized the oxidative stress (OS) status by the levels of reduced/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG), malondialdehyde (MDA) and the mutagenic base 8-oxo-7'8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG) in human gastric carcinoma (HGC) samples and compared the results with normal tissue from the same patients. We also analyzed 8-oxo-dG in peripheral mononuclear cells (PMNC) and urine from healthy control subjects and in affected patients in the basal state and one, three, six, nine and twelve months after tumor resection. The levels of DNA repair enzyme mRNA expression (hOGG1, RAD51, MUYTH and MTH1) were determined in tumor specimens and compared with normal mucosa. Tumor specimens e…
Trial profile: pilot study of the multicentre randomised trial of H. pylori eradication and pepsinogen testing for prevention of gastric cancer morta…
2019
Purpose: The GISTAR Pilot study is part of a large multi-centre randomised trial conducted in Latvia with the main aim to evaluate preventive strategies to decrease mortality from gastric cancer in high-risk areas, especially in the Baltic States and Eastern Europe. Participants: A total of 3,447 apparently healthy, asymptomatic participants (40-64 y/o) were recruited between 2013 and 2015 for the GISTAR pilot study. Participants were interviewed for socio-economic status, lifestyle, environmental and occupational exposures, medical history, family history of diseases, and dietary habits. Participants were randomly assigned to either Intervention (n=1,724) or Control (n=1,723) group. The in…
Microencapsulation of Enteric Bacteriophages in a pH-Responsive Solid Oral Dosage Formulation Using a Scalable Membrane Emulsification Process
2019
A scalable low-shear membrane emulsification process was used to produce microencapsulated Escherichia coli-phages in a solid oral dosage form. Uniform pH-responsive composite microparticles (mean size ~100 µ
Lack of Association Between Rs2067474 Polymorphism in the Histamine Receptor H2 Gene and Gastric Cancer In Latvian Population
2018
Abstract Histamine has an important role in the process of the gastric mucosa inflammation acting via histamine receptor H2 (encoded by the gene HRH2). Single nucleotide polymorphism of the enhancer element of HRH2 gene promoter rs2067474 (1018G>A)may be associated with changes of expression of the receptor. We attempted to clarify the association of this polymorphism with gastric cancer and/or atrophic gastritis in the Latvian (Caucasian) population. The study group consisted of 121 gastric cancer patients and 650 patients with no evidence of gastric neoplasia on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Genotyping for rs2067474 was performed with the TaqMan probe-based system using a commercia…
Pelvic Autonomic Nerve Preservation during Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) from Werner Kneist
2017
According to the German guideline for “Colorectal Cancer,” total mesorectal excision (TME) removes the cancer located at the central and lower thirds of the rectum and the pelvic floor while preserving the superior hypogastric plexus (SHP), the hypogastric nerves, and the inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP) (recommendation level A, level of evidence 1b, strong consensus). Intraoperative nerve damage is to be avoided to preserve postoperative quality of life with the premise of radical surgery. It is particularly necessary to preserve autonomously controlled urogenital and anorectal functions. Among other things, this presumes a fundamental understanding of current events on surgical topograph…
Improving opportunities for effective management of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease
2002
The recent introduction of proton pump inhibitors has extraordinarily improved the therapeutic approach to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. The concept of decreasing gastric acid secretion and increasing the pH in the lower oesophagus has been demonstrated to be therapeutically effective and the higher the level of pH achieved, the better the results. In spite of the evident efficacy of these molecules, there are still many patients who will continue to have symptoms despite medical treatment. Proton pump inhibitors suppress gastric acidity, but this effect shows a remarkable interindividual variation depending on different reasons. Thus, it is still possible to optimise medical therapy f…
Progression of Gastric Acid Production in Preterm Neonates: Utilization of In-vitro Method
2018
Background: There have been limited studies done regarding ability to produce gastric acid in preterm infants. Most studies have used in vivo method of assessing gastric pH. Objectives: The objectives of the study was to assess the feasibility of using an in vitro method of measuring gastric pH in babies ≤ 28 weeks gestational age (GA) and determine whether changes in gastric pH differ with gestational age, mode of delivery, and use of antenatal steroids. Design/Methods: Prospective study that enrolled extremely low birth weight (ELBW) babies. Gastric aspirate was collected before feeding. In vitro testing of gastric aspirates for pH were done on days of life 1, 3, 5, 7, 14, and 28 by using…
