Risk of lymph node metastasis in submucosal esophageal cancer: a review of surgically resected patients

2011

Endoscopic local procedures are increasingly applied in patients with superficial esophageal cancer as an alternative to radical oncologic resection. The objective of this article is to determine the risk of nodal metastases in submucosal (sm) esophageal cancer, comparing the two predominating histologic tumor types, squamous cell cancer (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (ADC).A query of PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Library (1980-2009) using predetermined search terms revealed 675 abstracts, of which 485 full-text articles were reviewed. A total of 105 articles met the selection criteria. A review of article references and consultation with experts revealed additional articles for inclusion.…

Multidisciplinary management of gastric and gastroesophageal cancers

2008

Carcinomas of the stomach and gastroesophageal junction are among the five top leading cancer types worldwide. In spite of radical surgical R0 resections being the basis of cure of gastric cancer, surgery alone provides long-term survival in only 30% of patients with advanced International Union Against Cancer (UICC) stages in Western countries because of the high risk of recurrence and metachronous metastases. However, recent large phase-III studies improved the diagnostic and therapeutic options in gastric cancers, indicating a more multidisciplinary management of the disease. Multimodal strategies combining different neoadjuvant and/or adjuvant protocols have clearly improved the gastric…

Histopathologic risk factors in oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma variants: An update with special reference to HPV-related carcinomas

2014

Accurate identification of the microscopic risk factors of oral and oropharyngeal (OP) squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and their morphologic variants is of at most importance, as these generally determine treatment modalities, prognosis and overall patient outcome. The great majority of oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas are microscopically described as kerartinizing squamous cell carcinoma (KSCC). They bear certain resemblance to keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. Tobacco habits and excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages have been considered to be the main etiologic agents in these carcinomas. The tumors occurred in older patients more commonly affected the oral…

Cancer of the Esophagus

2021

In 2015 esophageal cancer (OC) was globally the 11th most common cancer with 483,000 new cases and the 7th most common cause of cancer-related deaths, with 439,000 deaths. Esophageal cancer is a highly lethal disease of older age, sixth to seventh decades, associated with a remarkable decline in health-related quality of life, high mortality, and poor prognosis with an overall 5-year survival no greater than 20%. The two major histological types, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (ADC), while sharing the esophageal site, can be considered like two different neoplastic diseases as they differ in their epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, and treatment. Other malignancies …

Precision Medicine to Treat Advanced Gastroesophageal Adenocarcinoma: A Work in Progress

2020

Gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma (GEA) represents a heterogeneous disease and, when diagnosed as locally advanced or metastatic, it is characterized by poor prognosis. During the last few years, several molecular classifications have been proposed to try to personalize treatment for those patients diagnosed with advanced disease. Nevertheless, despite the great effort, precision medicine is still far from being a reality. The improvement in the molecular analysis due to the application of high throughput technologies based on DNA and RNA sequencing has opened a novel scenario leading to the personalization of treatment. The possibility to target epidermal growth factor receptor (HER)2, Claud…

Diversification and performance in the mobile app market: The role of the platform ecosystem

2019

Abstract We examine the effect of app developers' product line diversification decision on their performance and shed light on whether the type of platform ecosystem (open versus closed) where they commercialize apps influences this effect. We compare the revenue performance of diversified and specialized developers in Apple's App Store and Google Play. We show that in the Apple's App Store (closed platform) diversified developers always display lower performance than their specialized counterparts. In Google Play (open platform) diversification is beneficial in categories where diversified developers have predominant market share, whereas it is detrimental in categories dominated by specia…

On chip optical nanotweezing for dielectric particles manipulation

2014

On chips optical nanocavities have become useful tools for trapping and manipulation of colloidal objects. In this thesis we study the nanocavities as building blocks for optical forces, trapping and handling of particles. Proof of concept of trapping dielectric microspheres appears as the starting point of the development of lab on chip. In the first chapter we go through the literature of optical forces in free space and integrated optics. The second chapter presents the experimental tools for the characterization of nanocavities and the set-up developed to perform optical measurements with the colloidal particles. The third chapter describes the proof-of-concept trapping of polystyrene p…
