The protease complex consisting of dipeptidyl peptidase IV and seprase plays a role in the migration and invasion of human endothelial cells in colla…

2006

Abstract Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP4/CD26) and seprase/fibroblast activation protein α are homologous type II transmembrane, homodimeric glycoproteins that exhibit unique prolyl peptidase activities. Human DPP4 is ubiquitously expressed in epithelial and endothelial cells and serves multiple functions in cleaving the penultimate positioned prolyl bonds at the NH2 terminus of a variety of physiologically important peptides in the circulation. Recent studies showed a linkage between DPP4 and down-regulation of certain chemokines and mitogenic growth factors, and degradation of denatured collagens (gelatin), suggesting a role of DPP4 in the cell invasive phenotype. Here, we found the existen…

Cigarette smoke exposure inhibits extracellular MMP-2 (gelatinase A) activity in human lung fibroblasts

2007

Abstract Background Exposure to cigarette smoke is considered a major risk factor for the development of lung diseases, since its causative role has been assessed in the induction and maintenance of an inflamed state in the airways. Lung fibroblasts can contribute to these processes, due to their ability to produce proinflammatory chemotactic molecules and extracellular matrix remodelling proteinases. Among proteolytic enzymes, gelatinases A and B have been studied for their role in tissue breakdown and mobilisation of matrix-derived signalling molecules. Multiple reports linked gelatinase deregulation and overexpression to the development of inflammatory chronic lung diseases such as COPD.…

Anaphylaxie nach gleichzeitiger Impfung gegen Masern, Mumps, Röteln und Frühsommer-Meningoenzephalitis aufgrund einer Gelatineallergie

2006

Most allergic reactions after vaccination occur in patients sensitive to egg protein. Therefore this subject is well investigated, and the majority of common vaccines today contain only traces of egg protein. In contrast, there is little knowledge of hypersensitivities to other substances frequently contained in vaccines, e. g. antibiotics, phenol, gelatin and different preservatives. Here we report the case of a boy who had an anaphylactic reaction after being vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), and tick-born encephalitis (TBE) simultaneously. Different tests finally revealed a hypersensitivity to gelatin. This should be kept in mind especially during emergency care, since ge…

Biodegradable nano-polymers as delivery vehicles for therapeutic small non-coding ribonucleic acids.

2016

Nowadays, small non-coding Ribo Nucleic Acids (sncRNAs) such as siRNA, miRNA and shRNA are extremely serving to gene regulation. They are involved in many biological processes and in an increasing number of studies regarding a variety of application of sncRNAs toward human health and relieving diseases ranging from metabolic disorders to those involving various organ systems as well as different types of cancer. One of the most severe limitations for applying RNA interference technology is the absence of safe and effective carriers for in vivo delivery, including localizing the molecules to a specific site of interest and sustaining the presentation of the payloads for a controlled period o…

Development of antibiotic loaded biodegradable matrices to prevent superficial infections associated to total knee arthroplasty.

2019

Abstract Development of a pharmaceutical form for the superficial infections related with arthroplasties would be helpful for clinical practice. In this context, we set out to evaluate ciprofloxacin and gentamicin elution from systems based on chitosan. Films and semisolid hydrogels containing chitosan alone (2%) or in combination with gelatin (6%) or different proportions (from 12% to 36%) of tetrakis-(hydroxymethyl)-phosphonium-chloride (THPC) were tested as delivery systems. Different antibiotic doses were assayed (0.5 mg/cm2,1 mg/cm2 and 2 mg/cm2). Antibiotic release was studied for each formulation. In vitro cytocompatibility studies and a simulation exercise for bioactivity evaluation…

Plasma neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and long-term mortality in patients with acute heart failure and normal renal function

2015

Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) has emerged as a renal tubular marker for early renal dysfunction [1]. Recent studies highlighted its role in predicting acute kidney injury (AKI) and clinical outcomes in a wide range of cardiovascular diseases [2], [3], [4] and [5]. However, in heart failure (HF), conflicting results have been reported [4], [5], [6] and [7] and some ambiguities still prevail about the prognostic utility of NGAL beyond standard prognosticators and traditional renal biomarkers. We aimed to evaluate the independent ability of serum NGAL for predicting long-term mortality in patients admitted for acute HF (AHF). We prospectively enrolled 206 patients consecuti…

Zymographic detection and clinical correlations of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in breast cancer sera.

2004

Matrix metalloproteinases, in particular the gelatinases MMP-2 and MMP-9, have received great attention in recent years as putative tumour markers for clinical applications. The main reason for the observed interest is their easy detection in body fluids. Moreover, recent evidence has shown multiple functions of MMPs, rather than simply degrading ECM, which include the mobilisation of growth factors and processing of surface molecules. Several authors have reported increased levels of MMPs in a number of cancers, but clinical correlations in breast cancer are still fragmentary. Thus, the aim of the present research was to investigate the activity levels of circulating gelatinases in the ser…

Azodyed gelatin films for holographic recording

2013

Abstract In this work we present a preparation method of azo-dyed gelatin thin films for holographic recording and their photoinduced changes of optical properties. The non-toxic, commercially available and cheap ingredients were used for film preparation. The films were prepared by mixing azo-dyes with gelatin solution. The photoinduced properties of prepared films were investigated. The photoinduced dichroism and birefringence at 532 nm laser radiation were observed. The holographic recording of surface and volume gratings by 532 nm wavelength laser radiation were performed and surface relief gratings were studied with AFM. The mass transport direction in azodyed gelatin was studied.
