L’integrazione dei compiti della madre e del padre nell’educazione dei figli e delle figlie

2016

The harmonious development of youth personality requires family stability and a positive emotional atmosphere; both needs are threatened by pedagogical errors both theoretical and practical. Educationalists develop skills in parents when undertaking to understand their real needs refraining from using abstract models. The phenomenological study of the most frequent educational behavior is a good starting point to set training interventions for parents. Human imperfections, experienced in their parents – as their primary caregivers – do not prevent children from achieving their potential once they perceive in them a recognition of mistakes and a desire for improvement. Dealing with risk: Gender, stakes, and probability effects

2015

This paper investigates how subjects deal with financial risk, both "upside" (with a small chance of a high payoff) and "downside" (with a small chance of a low payoff). We find that the same people who avoid risk in the downside setting tend to make more risky choices in the upside one. The experiment is designed to disentangle the probability-weighting and utility-curvature components of risk attitudes, and to differentiate settings in which gender differences arise from those in which they do not. Women are more risk averse for downside risks, but gender differences are diminished for upside risks.

Serum hormone concentrations and physical performance during concurrent strength and endurance training in recreational male and female endurance run…

2011

To investigate the effects of concurrent strength and endurance training on physical performance and serum hormone levels a total of 32 recreational endurance runners were trained for 18 weeks. Subjects were divided into four training groups separated by the strength training mode and gender. The groups were women’s and men’s combined maximal and explosive strength training group (WME; n=9 and MME; n=9), and women’s and men’s muscle endurance strength training group (WE; n= 8 & ME; n=8). The training was executed in three consecutive periods (I; 10 weeks, II; 4 weeks and III; 4 weeks). The endurance training in all groups was low-intensity (below lactate threshold) running throughout the wh…

Cognitive Skills, Math-Related Emotions, and Beliefs Explaining Response to Arithmetic Fluency Intervention

2023

We examined the associations of cognitive skills, math-related emotions and beliefs, and gender with responses to an arithmetic fluency intervention. Elementary school children with dysfluent arithmetic skills (N=69) participated in an arithmetic fluency intervention (with and without self-efficacy support) implemented in small groups in schools for 12 weeks. Hierarchical regression models including cognitive skills or math-related emotions and beliefs predicted 21% to 50% of the variation in the intervention response, i.e., improvement in arithmetic fluency. Cognitive skills were associated with the response mainly among boys, whereas math-related emotions and beliefs explained more among …

The Influence of an Enriched Sport Program on Children’s Sport Motivation in the School Context: The ESA PROGRAM

2020

Purpose: Besides the evident positive effect on body development, physical activity has proven to boost executive functions, especially if the exercises are enriched with cognitive stimuli. Previous studies have shown that introducing challenging exercises in the physical activity routine can also enhance motivation. Therefore, enriching a physical education program with cognitively challenging exercises may also foster children’s motivation during physical education classes, where the motivation is high at the beginning of the school year and low at the end of it. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to test if a sport program enriched by cognitive stimuli may improve kids’ motivation o…

The Effect on Health of Marital and Cohabitation Status

2015

Researches on the consequences of divorce on health are scarce in Spain. This study is a contribution to this field from sociology and demography. In it, the health of separated/divorced Spanish men and women is analyzed using the European Health Survey 2009-2010. Employing questions on perceived health and objective mental health, we explore whether 1) people with divorced or separated marital status suffer from poorer health than married; if 2) the cohabitation with a partner promotes a better health; and if 3) gender is a source of health differences between divorcees. The results show that the health of female divorcees is worse and that male divorcees have higher risk for chronic depre…

Deceit and facial expression in children: the enabling role of the “poker face” child and the dependent personality of the detector

2015

This study presents the relation between the facial expression of a group of children when they told a lie and the accuracy in detecting the lie by a sample of adults. To evaluate the intensity and type of emotional content of the children’s faces, we applied an automated method capable of analyzing the facial information from the video recordings (FaceReader 5.0 software). The program classified videos as showing a neutral facial expression or an emotional one. There was a significant higher mean of hits for the emotional than for the neutral videos, and a significant negative correlation between the intensity of the neutral expression and the number of hits from the detectors. The lies ex…

Persistent joblessness and fertility intentions

2019

Background: The vast majority of demographic studies have approached and operationalised the notion of economic uncertainty using snapshot indicators. Hence, the complexity and diversity of individuals' employment careers were largely hidden. We posit that the persistence of joblessness - that is, repeated and close spells of joblessness - represents a crucial marker of economic uncertainty in the realm of fertility (intention) research. Objective: We aim to explore the association between persistent joblessness of both members of the couple and women's fertility intentions among those who entered employment at least once in the last five years. Methods: We develop an index of persistent jo…
