The gender gap in teenagers’ incomes. A 30-year trend in Finland 1983–2013
2015
ABSTRACTIn this article, we examine the gender differences in disposable incomes of teenagers during a 30-year period 1983–2013, using large nationally representative survey data. Since the gender pay gap in working life has been rather persistent in Finland and the EU, it was necessary to see whether the gap persists in teenagers’ incomes as well. Although teenagers do not receive much income from work, they adapt to the structures of society during their teenage years and learn gender roles in consumption, education, and working life. Our results reveal that the gender pay gap has been rather persistent in Finland, particularly among 14- and 16-year-old teenagers. It is only among 18-year…
Towards breaking the Gender Gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
2020
The gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) has drawn the attention of research and academic communities due to its impact in the Digital Society, targeting the fourth and fifth 2030 sustainable development goals of achieving quality education and gender equality. Recent studies show that women are enrolling STEM studies in smaller proportion than men and that they have a larger probability to renounce to their jobs or to take leaves. In this scenario, the involvement of educational institutions is seminal to change this trend. The School of Engineering of the University of Valencia (ETSE-UV), Spain, launched in 2011 a pilot program to promote STEM careers, foc…
IPR gender gaps: a first look at utility model, design right and trademark filings
2018
This study extends the analysis of the gender gap in patenting into design rights, utility model (UMs) and trademarks (TMs), which are complementary methods for protecting intellectual property. The analysis is descriptive and uses register data from the Finnish patent and registration office covering the years 1982–2013. A persistent gender gap is found for all intellectual property rights. The gap has narrowed over time for national patent, design right and TM filings but not for UM filings. It is found that, in comparison to men, women are relatively less often single inventors or designers and more often members of inventor or designer teams. peerReviewed
Essays on Employment and Unemployment Transitions
2015
The Great Recession has led to important adjustments in the labour market of most developed countries and has dramatically affected the labour market in Spain. According to the Labour Force Survey, the Spanish unemployment rate has increased drastically from 8.5% in 2006 to 25% in 2012 (see the figure). In order to understand the unemployment rate it is important to consider both entry into and exit out of unemployment. This thesis addresses relevant questions for policymakers in line with the objectives of the Europe 2020 strategy. How does the Great Recession affect the patterns and determinants of durations of unemployment and new job matches? How did gender differences in labour market …
The Unfolding of Gender Gap in Education
2015
The gender gap in education against females becomes smaller as the level of development increases and turns in their favor in developed countries. Through analysis of regional variation in the gender gap within Turkey, which displays a similar pattern to the crosscountry pattern, this paper studies the factors that lead to the emergence of a gender gap against females. The data for student achievement and aspirations for further education during compulsory school show that females are just as well prepared and motivated for further education as their male counterparts across regions with very different levels of development. Despite this fact, large gaps arise in high school registration an…

On a small island, someone is patiently looking at the ocean, waiting for the shearwaters to come back to their nests, the hair blown by a gentle breeze, a laptop full of notes open on the legs. On the other side of the globe, perched on a high ladder, a scientist is checking a Pygmy Owl nest box. A cautious song breaks the stillness of the morning: spring is coming and soon the taiga will be alive with breeding activities. In a small lab, under a buzzing lamp, a young researcher is hunched over a pile of ancient bird bones. Each one echoes past stories of changing climate, warning us about the future. A lonely figure stands against a hazy sky, meditating on the battles won and those still …
Desigualdades de género en el trabajo. La brecha de género en el empleo y la distribución de las tareas de cuidado
2004
This paper focuses on the factors contributing to gender inequality in the distribution of paid work and unpaid work in homes. The European Union Household Panel for Spain is used to empirically test the relative impact of such factors and their contribution to gender inequality. Three indicators are considered: intra-household inequality in employment status, the gender gap in paid employment and the ratio between unpaid care activities and time spent in paid employment. Personal characteristics of the female partner such as age and education have a significant impact on these three indicators. Household characteristics such as the difference in income and in time devoted to caring activit…
What drives future business leaders? How work values and gender shape young adults' entrepreneurial and leadership aspirations
2018
Highlights • Work values strongly predict later entrepreneurial aspirations and leadership aspirations. • The pattern of relationships was similar but not identical for both aspirations. • There is a gender gap in both entrepreneurial aspirations and leadership aspirations. • Gender differences in work values contribute to the gender gap in these aspirations. Abstract Who wants to become a business leader? We investigated whether young adults' work values (i.e., the importance placed on different job characteristics and rewards) predict their entrepreneurial aspirations (i.e., the intention to create a venture) and leadership aspirations (i.e., the intention to become a leader in a business…
What drives future business leaders? How work values and gender shape young adults' entrepreneurial and leadership aspirations
2018
Who wants to become a business leader? We investigated whether young adults' work values (i.e., the importance placed on different job characteristics and rewards) predict their entrepreneurial aspirations (i.e., the intention to create a venture) and leadership aspirations (i.e., the intention to become a leader in a business context). Furthermore, we illuminated whether gender differences in work values contribute to the pervasive gender gap in these aspirations. Analyses in a sample of young adults from Finland (N = 1138) revealed that a higher importance placed on extrinsic rewards and a lower importance placed on security at age 21 predicted higher entrepreneurial and leadership aspira…
