Relation between current alcohol consumption and attitude towards alcohol use among students

2020

Competition, Gender Equality, and Doping in Sports in the Red Queen Effect Perspective

2022

The nature of sports is characterized by a strong competitive component that generates inequalities among athletes at different levels, specifically in relation to gender, technology, and doping. These inequalities can be represented according to the Red Queen effect perspective, which has been previously hypothesized in other competitive environments (evolutionary biology and economics, for instance). The Red Queen effect considers each competitive environment to require a constant effort to maintain a position of competitive advantage in order reach the best result possible. Therefore, the aim of the current paper is to provide an innovative perspective for the understanding of competitio…

Institutional and Affective Practices of Domestic Violence Interventions in Social Work: Malignant Positioning of Victims

2020

This chapter investigates the institutional and affective practices of domestic violence (DV) interventions in Finnish social work. It examines the expression of social workers’ emotions related to intervening in DV and how these expressions result in the positioning of clients. Encountering and intervening in DV is often challenging; ideological presumptions, conceptions, gender-neutral discussions and misrecognition of violence affect institutional arrangements and practices, and the ways in which professionals feel about and respond to violence. We utilise positioning theory to analyse social workers’ focus group interview data (n = 20). We consider (1) how emotions expressed by social w…

Best practices for teaching boys

2015

Boys are the ones in trouble, they say. They are trailing girls in reading and writing, are more likely to get in trouble or be labelled as learning disabled, and are less likely to go to college. Educators, citing emerging brain research, say that the two sexes learn differently and that schools are more geared to girls than to their ants-in-the-pants counterparts. But they are adopting strategies to help boys succeed, from playing multiplication baseball to handing out stress balls and setting up boys-only schools. Nowadays, there is an urgent call for a more significant presence of male teachers in primary schools. Here are the results of an extensive research concerning gender differenc…

Children in the visual coverage of the European refugee crisis: A case study of the World Press Photo 2016

2018

Shifts in the visual coverage of refugees arriving in Europe and prominent compassion fatigue emphasize the need to examine visual strategies utilized to report on the crisis. This study focuses on representations of refugee children using a case of the World Press Photo (WPP) 2016. The material was interpreted with a model for visual rhetorical interpretation of journalistic photographs. Findings indicate the main visual elements involved in representing refugee children: visual trope of the migrant father, relation between children and barriers, visual oxymoron (juxtaposition of contradictory elements) and atmosphere in photographs. Findings suggest that photographs address polemics speci…

Risk narrations and perceptions in the COVID-19 time. A discourse analysis through the Italian press

2020

This paper explores how the risk related to the pandemic of COVID-19 was managed, narrated and perceived in Italy during the lockdown phase, from February until June 2020. To reach this aim, the study provides a discourse analysis of three main level: the official institutional discourses declaimed by the government and the health authority; the risk narration spread through the diaphragm of the Italian press, and specifically through two of the most-read newspapers in Italy (Repubblica and Corriere della Sera) and their related weeklies (Venerdì di Repubblica and Sette); finally, the diverse reactions and perceptions to the risk coming from the most affected and most vulnerable subjects, c…

The loving heart of a mother or a greedy politician? : media representations of female presidents in Liberia and Malawi

2016

2.) miten sukupuoli on määritellyt kyseisten presidenttien esittämisen mediassa? …
