O100 WORLDWIDE TECHNIQUES AND OUTCOMES OF ROBOT-ASSISTED MINIMALLY INVASIVE ESOPHAGECTOMY (RAMIE): RESULTS FROM THE INTERNATIONAL UGIRA REGISTRY

2019

Abstract Aim The aim of this study was to gain insight in the techniques and outcomes of RAMIE worldwide. Background & Methods Although robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) is increasingly adopted. The current literature on RAMIE mainly consists of single-center case series with considerable variation in reported techniques and outcomes. To gain an overview of the worldwide practice in RAMIE, an online registry was established by the Upper GI International Robotic Association (UGIRA). The collected data involve patient- and treatment characteristics, as well as postoperative outcomes that include complications as defined by the Esophageal Complications Consensus Group…

Death caused by a chain saw – homicide, suicide or accident?

1999

A 31-year-old farm worker was found dead beside a chain saw. Based on the testimony of a colleague and because of the situation at the site, the police very soon presupposed an accident. It was assumed that the victim had slipped on the sodden ground and had been killed by the subsequent swerving of the saw when starting the engine. The body presented with a deep lacerated wound at the right side of the nape of the neck, including the first cervical vertebra, the medullary canal and the right mandible as well as multiple fissures of the occipital bone, which were attributed to repeated forceful use of the chain by another person. A second wound with relatively sharp edges and a tangential f…

The Origins of Oncological Pancreatic Surgery in Spain. A Tribute to Pioneers

2016

Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is a very complex operation. Its development took place very slowly at the most prestigious centers in the world. The aim of this investigation is to know who were the first surgeons to perform a PD in Spain as well as its historical circumstances. Despite all kinds of difficulties and very few resources, the first PD in Spain were carried out in Barcelona at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau where from the mid-50s a school of gastrointestinal surgery emerged with surgeons soon to become the spearhead of the Spanish surgery and a reference for the whole country: Pi-Figueras, Vicente Artigas, Antonio Soler-Roig and Antonio Llauradó. Almost simultaneously, …

The Ultrasonographic Exam for Acute Appendicitis at Patient’s Bed

2019

Abstract Acute appendicitis is one of the most frequent surgical emergencies in children. The diagnosis of this condition is still a challenge for small pre-school children, and, generally, for children, as the wrong diagnosis is 28-57% for children between 2-12 years old. Therefore, the ultrasonographic exam for suspected acute appendicitis at patient’s bed (POCUS) is a necessary and useful paraclinic exam for supporting the diagnosis. The procedure has established: the quality of use in the emergency department (ED) of POCUS by the pediatric emergency doctors; the performance of ultrasonografic exam (US) in acute appendicitis (AA); reduces associated costs for imaging studies by standardi…

A suspected case of hunting accident. Case report

2010

Nowadays, the use of molecular biology in forensics has made it possible to identify human victim and sometimes even the circumstances under which the death occurred through. In our case, a corpse of a 50-years old man with a gunshot wound was found in the woods. The suspected murderer declared that it had been a hunting accident while he shot a wild boar. During the autopsy, a bullet (Borra-bullet Gualandi, 32 gr) was found in the abdomen of the victim. The authors investigated the presence of boar and victim blood both on the bullet, in order to substantiate the thesis of the hunting accident. Laboratory investigations underscored the presence of human cellular material on the bullet, whi…

A Rare Accident

2007

In 1964, I moved from Vienna to Homburg/Saar to take an Associate Professor position in one of the most recognized departments of urology headed by Prof. C.E. Alken. Still on duty at 4 p.m., I received a call from the chief of the surgical department to join him immediately in the emergency room.
