Nonlinear pseudo-bosons

In a series of recent papers the author has introduced the notion of (regular) pseudo-bosons showing, in particular, that two number-like operators, whose spectra are ${\Bbb N}_0:={\Bbb N}\cup\{0\}$, can be naturally introduced. Here we extend this construction to operators with rather more general spectra. Of course, this generalization can be applied to many more physical systems. We discuss several examples of our framework.
Generalized Rough Sets in Contextual Spaces

This paper presents a generalization of Pawlak’s conception of rough sets [6] and [7]. It is more general than Pawlak’s solution of the problem of the definability of sets, the knowledge of which is incomplete and vague. The authors’ conception is based on conception of contextual space [4], which was inspired by Ziarko’s approach [12] to rough sets. Rough sets introduced by Pawlak [6] are particular cases of contextual rough sets defined in the contextual approximation space. Incorporating acoustic-phonetic knowledge into Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems design has been proven a viable approach to rise ASR accuracy. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a popular unsupervised neural network able to provide effective clustering and data visualization for multidimensional input datasets. In this paper, we present an application of the simulated annealing procedure to the SOM learning algorithm with the aim to obtain a fast learning and better performances in terms of quantization error. The proposed learning algorithm is called Fast Learning Self-Organized Map, and it does not affect the easiness of the basic learning algorithm of the standard SOM. Particle Group Metropolis Methods for Tracking the Leaf Area Index

Monte Carlo (MC) algorithms are widely used for Bayesian inference in statistics, signal processing, and machine learning. In this work, we introduce an Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique driven by a particle filter. The resulting scheme is a generalization of the so-called Particle Metropolis-Hastings (PMH) method, where a suitable Markov chain of sets of weighted samples is generated. We also introduce a marginal version for the goal of jointly inferring dynamic and static variables. The proposed algorithms outperform the corresponding standard PMH schemes, as shown by numerical experiments.
Generalized singly-implicit Runge-Kutta methods with arbitrary knots

The aim of this paper is to derive Butcher's generalization of singly-implicit methods without restrictions on the knots. Our analysis yields explicit computable expressions for the similarity transformations involved which allow the efficient implementation of the first phase of the method, i.e. the solution of the nonlinear equations. Furthermore, simple formulas for the second phase of the method, i.e. computation of the approximations at the next nodal point, are established. Finally, the matrix which governs the stability of the method is studied.
Perception of illusory surfaces and contours in goldfish

Goldfish(Carassius auratus)were trained to discriminate triangles and squares using a two choice procedure. In the first experiment, three goldfish were trained with food reward on a black outline triangle on a white background, while a black outline square was shown for comparison. In transfer tests, a Kanizsa triangle and a Kanizsa square were presented, perceived by humans as an illusory triangle- or square-shaped surface of slightly higher brightness than the background. The choice behavior in this situation indicates that goldfish are able to discriminate between both figures in almost the same way as in the training situation. The mystery of the Polish soul. B. W. Johnson's effectà rebours

Studies conducted in Poland replicated a not very-well known effect discovered by B. W. Johnson (1937). In his study students estimated their mood on several successive days each time comparing it to the mood they usually have. The results revealed a peculiar positive bias in that the students usually defined their mood as 'better than usual'. Johnson's study was replicated in Poland, where demonstration of optimism is not a cultural norm. The results suggest that Polish subjects 'usually define their mood as worse than usual'. The generalization and limitation of this negative bias is discussed in the light of the Pollyanna Principle and related empirical studies involving Polish subjects.

Abstract A multichoice game is a generalization of a cooperative TU game in which each player has several activity levels. We study the solution for these games proposed by Van Den Nouweland et al.
