Vaccination against HPV-Associated Neoplasias
2014
Neoplasias associated with anogenital human papilloma viruses (HPV) are characterised by high patient morbidity and mortality and by appreciable limitations in the patientʼs quality of life. Each year 530,000 women worldwide and 4800 women in Germany develop cervical cancer 1, 2. Biomolecular and epidemiological studies carried out in the past 25 years have demonstrated causal link between persisting infections with HPV 16 and HPV 18 and at least 11 other so-called high-risk HPVs (HR-HPVs) and the development of cervical cancer and its precursor lesions (so-called dysplasias or, respectively, cervical intraepithelial neoplasias – CIN). HPV 16, HPV 18 and other HR-HPVs are also the causes of…
Myxoid liposarcoma of the spermatic cord: US and MR imaging findings.
2013
We report a patient with myxoid liposarcoma of the spermatic cord in whom combined use of both ultrasound (US) and MRI helped to suggest the diagnosis. The lesion was solid at US and vascularized at color Doppler. T1-weighted MRI did not show fat within it; on T2-weighted images it had high signal intensity, with a cyst-like appearance. It is known that fat-poor myxoid liposarcomas with high water content may mimic a cystic lesion on non-contrast-enhanced MR; then, a combination of MRI findings, suggesting a cyst, and of US findings, showing the mass was actually solid and vascularized, allowed preoperatively the diagnosis of fat-poor myxoid liposarcoma. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Extent of Surgery in Rhabdomyosarcoma of Urogenital Structures
1989
After high inguinal semicastration in group-1 paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), the patient having undergone chemotherapy can be followed closely by CT scanning without retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy. In contrast, retroperitoneal RMS should be operated on as radically as possible after downstaging the tumor mass. In RMS of the female genitalia locally limited organ-preserving surgery is the method of choice. The prognosis is excellent with adjuvant chemotherapy. Only 20% of all bladder RMS arise from the bladder dome or the movable part of the bladder, where primary partial resection including a safety margin of 3 cm of healthy tissue is possible. The majority, however, arising from t…
Colon pouch (Mainz III) for continent urinary diversion
2007
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of a continent cutaneous pouch made exclusively of colon (Mainz pouch III), as excellent results with the Mainz pouch III in irradiated patients suggested that the indication for this type of urinary diversion could be extended. PATIENTS AND METHODS The outcome of 24 patients with continent cutaneous urinary diversions using colon segments (Mainz pouch III) was investigated retrospectively. Overall, 22 of the patients had a malignant disease and two a benign disease; 16 had a hysterectomy and pelvic exenteration for gynaecological tumours; two men with a rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate had a radical cystoprostatectomy; one woman had pelvic exenteration for bla…

Intermediate filaments of normal and neoplastic tissues of the female genital tract with emphasis on problems of differential tumor diagnosis
1984
Cytokeratins of normal epithelia and of some neoplasms of the female genital tract were studied by immunofluorescence microscopy of frozen sections and by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of cytoskeletal proteins from microdissected tissues. All normal epithelia were stained with the monoclonal cytokeratin antibody KG 8.13 whereas certain monoclonal antibodies stained only simple epithelia. As revealed by gel electrophoresis the normal epithelia of the ovarian surface, oviduct, endometrium and endocervix contained cytokeratin polypeptides Nos. 7, 8, 18 and 19. In contrast, stratified exocervical epithelium showed a much more complex pattern (polypeptides No. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 11, 13, 14, 15…
Risk assessment in ginecology and obstetrics in Sicily: an approach based on Wolff's Criteria
2013
Objectives To apply Wolff’s Criteria to hospital discharge records (HDR) in order to detect adverse events worthy of further study. Methods Gynecology and Obstetrics Units of three Sicilian hospitals were considered and HDR regarding ordinary and day hospital admissions in 2008 were collected. A matched case-control study was designed, by random selection of 10 controls at maximum for each case. Matching was performed on the variables age and speciality of admission (gynecology or obstetrics). Results Out of a total of 7011 HDR examined, 114 cases were identified with Wolff’s Criteria. Multivariate analysis confirmed a statistically significant association with the origin of admission, diag…
Is chlamydial heat shock protein 60 a risk factor for oncogenesis?
2004
Heat shock protein 60 (HSP60) plays an important role in the protein folding of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Most of the papers published on chlamydial HSP60 concern its role in immune response during infection. In the last decade, exposure to Chlamydia trachomatis has been consistently associated with the development of cervical and ovarian cancer. Moreover, it has been suggested that chlamydial HSP60 may have an anti- apoptotic effect during persistent infection. We hypothesize that the accumulation of exogenous chlamydial HSP60 in the cytoplasm of actively replicating eukaryotic cells may interfere with the regulation of the apoptotic pathway. The concomitant expression of viral onc…
Exclusive MRI-based tandem and colpostats reconstruction in gynaecological brachytherapy treatment planning
2008
Purpose: According to the GYN GEC-ESTRO Recommendations, MRI is needed with the modality of T2 weighted. CT-MR compatible tandem Plus colpostats (T/C) (Nucletron) is widely used in cervical brachytherapy. The major challenge of MRI is the lack of dummy catheters. Therefore, an additional imaging modality is usually required. One disadvantage of sliced-based reconstruction is that resolution in longitudinal directions can be affected by the slice thickness. The aim of this study is to present a modified T/C applicator in which the catheter visibility is significantly improved. Methods and materials: A modification to the existing T/C applicator has been made available, increasing the cathete…
Psychometric Properties of the Fatigue Questionnaire EORTC QLQ-FA12 in a Sample of Female Cancer Patients.
2017
Abstract Context Cancer patients frequently suffer from fatigue. Recently, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life group developed a new 12-item fatigue assessment instrument. Objectives The aim of this study was to psychometrically test this questionnaire in comparison with the three-item fatigue scale of the EORTC QLQ-C30. Methods A sample of 354 patients who were being treated for breast cancer or gynecologic cancer were examined using the new fatigue questionnaire EORTC QLQ-FA12 and the EORTC QLQ-C30 during their hospital stay (t1) and three months after hospital discharge (t2). Confirmatory factorial analyses, item analyses, test-retest re…
