Effects of Genotype and Climate on Productive Performance of High Oleic Carthamus tinctorius L. under Rainfed Conditions in a Semi-Arid Environment o…
2023
Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a promising oilseed crop for cultivation in central Southern Italy due to its high tolerance to drought and salinity stress and appreciable seed and oil yields. The genetic diversity of cultivars and climate factors can affect fatty acid composition and yield traits. This study aimed to assess the effects of genotype and climate conditions on the productive performance of eight high oleic safflower genotypes under rainfed conditions in Sicily (Italy). These genotypes were compared to the Montola 2000 cultivar, which was used as a reference. Tests were carried out during the growing seasons of 2014–2015 and 2015–2016. The experimental design…
Crop rotation, nitrogen fertilization and genotype effects on durum wheat productive characteristics
2004
A field trial was performed in 2000/01 and 2001/02 in the experimental farm “Sparacia” (Cammarata – AG – Sicily) in order to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative response of four varieties of durum wheat when grown after a legume crop (field pea) or in rotation with itself and when submitted to different N-fertilization levels: no fertilization (N0, control), 60 kg ha-1 (N 60, rate advised by the EC n. 2078/92 for the Sicilian territory) and 120 kg ha-1 (N 120, fertilization rate commonly used under the “traditional” cropping technique). In the first trial year, the fertilized trial expressed a better yield performance than the control, but in 2001/02, characterized by severe and prolo…
Population genetic study in the Balearic endemic plant speciesDigitalis minor(Scrophulariaceae) using RAPD markers
2001
Digitalis minor (Scrophulariaceae) is a cardenolide-producing plant endemic to the eastern Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, and Cabrera) that occurs in two morphologically distinct varieties: D. minor var. minor (pubescent) and D. minor var. palaui (glabrous). Levels and patterns of genetic diversity in 162 individuals from 17 D. minor populations across the entire geographic range were assessed using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Comigrating RAPD fragments tested were found to be homologous by Southern hybridization in both var. minor and var. palaui. To avoid bias in parameter estimation, analyses of population genetic structure were restricted to those RAPD bands t…
Genetic differentiation and structure of Hippocrepis valentina (Leguminosae) populations
2000
We present an analysis of isozyme variability in natural populations of the plant species Hippocrepis valentina (Leguminosae), which is endemic to the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain and currently has endangered species status. Our results, obtained by starch-gel electrophoresis of 15 loci, show normal levels of variability for species with similar biology. The comparison with the patterns of genetic variability of two closely related species, H. balearica and H. grosii, confirms the taxonomic status of H. valentina as a proper species, independent of H. balearica, as previously suggested. The analysis of population subdivision shows that substantial variation among populations is pres…
Effect of the IL28B Rs12979860 C/T polymorphism on the incidence and features of active cytomegalovirus infection in allogeneic stem cell transplant …
2013
The current study was aimed at investigating whether the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (rs12979860), upstream of the IL28B gene, had any effect on the incidence rate and the features of active CMV infection in the Allogeneic stem cell transplantation setting. This was a retrospective observational study including 151 patients undergoing T cell-replete Allo-SCT. Donor and recipient IL28 SNP genotype was determined by allele-specific real-time PCR. The incidence rate of active CMV infection was not significantly associated with either the donor or the recipient IL28B SNP genotype. Nevertheless, a trend towards a lower incidence of active CMV infection was noted in the donor T/T populat…
Origin of a sudden mass occurrence of the stolbur phytoplasma vectorHyalesthes obsoletus(Cixiidae) in Austria
2014
The grapevine disease ‘bois noir’ is widespread in European viticulture, but in many regions there is a lack of correspondence between disease spread and abundance of the main insect vector, the planthopper Hyalesthes obsoletus. This was the situation in Austria until 2012, when a mass occurrence of the vector was observed on Urtica dioica, a new host plant for the vector and reservoir plant for the pathogen, stolbur phytoplasma, in this area. Here we analyse the origin of the Austrian vector populations using genetic markers. The origin was unambiguously assigned to two regional populations, and two causes for the population expansion: immigration of East Central European populations and l…

I fattori di variabilità genetici, ambientali e colturali della composizione dell'olio d'oliva
2009
The compositon of olive oil results from a multivariate interaction in which genotype, environment, and agronomic-dependent factors are involved. The genotype controls genetic traits accounting for the rate pattern of fruit growth, oil accumulation in mesocarp cells and fruit ripening, while the genotype x environment interaction changes the rate of fruit growth, oil accumulation and fruit ripening pattern. The latter accounts for large changes in oil composition and sensorial features. The influence of genotype is linked to differences in the fruit growth and ripening patterns, though all those factors that may have an influence on fruit size, flesh/pit ratio and relative growth rate have …
