Shifting Imageries: Gentrification and the New Touristic Images of the Inner City of Palermo
2021
After the bombings of 1943, the historic centre of Palermo was left with several crumbling buildings and a social situation of some concern. Therefore, over the last sixty years, all kinds of representations of Palermo have revolved around the presence of criminal organizations and the risks of living in the most dangerous areas of the city (including the city centre). These representations started to change around the beginning of the new century when the inner city of Palermo underwent an intense process of redefinition of its territorial identity. Several key factors may be used to explain this process: from traditional economic reasons concerning gentrification and touristification, to …
2022
The contribution starts from a basic question that is whether the historical centres of large cities can escape the same destiny exclusively based on the historical heritage excellence, on tourism and cultural activity or can continue to play the role of a vital urban structure with a mix of social groups, of ordinary functions and activities as the residential one. Moreover, the historical centre tendency to transform into predominantly commercial and touristic areas has had surreal implications during the period of lockdown caused by Covid-19 pandemic, when the most valuable parts of our cities were totally emptied of human presence. This is also confirmed in the case of the historical ce…
Multicultural Palermo between gentrification and real estate market crisis in the historical centre
2022
Multiculturalism is a characteristic of the post industrial city which will challenge planning through new paradigms, in fact the increasing of transnational flow of migrants reshapes the physical urban space and the socio-cultural relations, expressing new housing needs often neglected by planning and public policies. The essay discusses the experimental analysis conducted in an area of the historical centre of Palermo, where there is a high concentration of migrants in order to assess their potential involvement in the processes of residential gentrification, within the controversial panorama of urban regeneration policies, economic crisis and real estate market. The demographic dynamic, …

Smart Cities.
In Euro…
“Mega-Sports Events, Gentrification and Social Mobilization in Rio de Janeiro” - Experiences from Metrô Mangueira
2017
Master's thesis Development management UT503 - University of Agder 2017 In order to promote gentrification of the city of Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian government and the municipality of Rio de Janeiro have actively used Mega-Sports Events (MSE) in urban planning. Examples are tax cuts and the legalization of various measures for large-scale urban programs, to prepare the city for hosting these prestigious events. Whilst trying to fulfil the obligations from MSEs, the host city denies its citizens access to democratic participation and thereby their right to the city. The promises made to the international sportive federations regarding upgraded infrastructure, sportive arenas, media covera…
Multiculturalism is a characteristic of the post-industrial city, which will challenge planning through new paradigms. The essay discusses the experimental analys…
L'università come controverso attore di rivitalizzazione del centro storico - University as (controversial) player for the requalification of the his…
2013
In the South of Italy, on one side, University located in historic centres is a widespread and well-established historical phenomenon, while on the other side it can hardly play a key role into the regeneration processes in action. The case of Palermo is useful to take into account some gen- eral aspects which may also regard other urban realities in Southern Italy. In Palermo, until recent times, the discontinu- ous interest in the historic centre has been a distinctive feature of University policies, despite the number of its locations: suffice it to consider the three big monastic complexes of the Theatins (School of Law), the Martorana (School of Architecture) and St. Rocco (School of P…
