A Revision of the Nearctic Species of Hecamedoides Hendel (Diptera: Ephydridae)

Abstract Species of the shore-fly genus Hecamedoides Hendel from the Nearctic Region are revised, including description of H. lattini, new species (Virginia. Stafford: Falmouth (38°19.2′N, 77°28.1′W; Rappahannock River; 9 m). To provide context and also to facilitate identification, diagnoses are provided for the tribe Discocerinini and genus in addition to a key to the genera and species, H. lattini and H. unispinosus, occurring in the New World. Diagnostic characters, especially of the male terminalia, are illustrated, and distribution maps are also provided.

Diploid modal numbers of chromosomes 2n=48 forHippocampus ramulosus and 2n=44 forH. hippocampus, collected in the Gulf of Palermo in May 1985, are established. No sex-linked heteromorphic pairs are observed in the two species analyzed. The karyotype ofH. hippocampus seems to be a derived condition.

A survey of marine benthic community biodiversity off Low Island (Southern Ocean) was carried out by the Spanish Antarctic Expedition Bentart 2006, using the BIO Hesperides. Samples from the expedition included an important collection of hydroids. A total of 39 species was recorded, two of them being new to science (Eudendrium bentart sp. nov., and Orthopyxis curiosa sp. nov.), belonging to the subclasses Anthoathecata and Leptothecata. Anthoathecates are represented by only two species, both referable to the genus Eudendrium. Additions to the Indian oribatid mite fauna, with description of a new species of the genus <em>Niphocepheus</em> (Acari, Oribatida)

An annotated checklist of oribatid mite taxa from three sites of India is presented. It includes 71 species/ subspecies, 55 genera and 35 families. Twenty nine species/subspecies are recorded for the first time in India; five species/subspecies—Trhypochthonius tectorum stercus, Hermanniella aliverdievae, Sphodrocepheus tridactylus, Caenosamerus spatiosus, Dolicheremaeu distinctus—are recorded for the first time in the Oriental region. Niphocepheus neotrichus sp. nov. (Niphocepheidae) is described; it differs from other known species of Niphocepheus by the presence of epimeral neotrichy and three pairs of anal setae.

Two new species of oribatid mites of the family Galumnidae, Pergalumna minituberculata sp. nov. and Carinogalumna alineata sp. nov., are described from soil of secondary mixed broadleaved forest with bamboo in eastern Nepal. The genus Carinogalumna is recorded for the first time in the Oriental region. A complete revision of the world species of the genus Phaenoglyphis Förster, 1869 has been conducted. A total of 25 species of Phaenoglyphis are valid after studying their type material. Two new species are described: Phaenoglyphis belizini sp. n. and Phaenoglyphis palmirae sp. n. Two species are synonymized: P. dolichocera (Cameron, 1889) with P. nigripes (Thomson, 1877) and P. pecki Andrews, 1978 with P. villosa (Hartig, 1841). Phaenoglyphis bangalorensis Kurian, 1953 was considered as incertae sedis. Phaenoglyphis duplocarpentieri (Kieffer, 1904) and P. hedickei Hedicke, 1928 are considered lost. First Record of the Genus Acanthixalus Laurent, 1944 from the Upper Guinean Rain Forest, West Africa, with the Description of a New Species

Abstract We describe a new species of Acanthixalus from southwestern Ivory Coast. Acanthixalus sonjae sp. nov. differs from the Central African Acanthixalus spinosus genetically by 4.6 % in the investigated 16S rRNA. Morphologically adult frogs are very similar to A. spinosus. Male A. sonjae have wider heads and probably smaller gular glands than A. spinosus. Tadpoles of A. sonjae differ by much longer tails. Acanthixalus sonjae males are apparently mute. The new species is semiaquatic and lives in large water-filled cavities of trees in secondary and primary rain forest. Tadpoles complete metamorphosis in three months. They are at least partly carnivorous.

The pollen–ovule ratio (P/O) is commonly used to estimate the mode of sexual reproduction in flowering plants. In previous studies, a clear correspondence has been detected between this character and the degree of autogamy. We here investigate variation in this character and its expected correlates in the genus Veronica (Plantaginaceae). Pollen–ovule ratios of 45 species representing eleven percent of all the species in the genus were investigated and compared with results from crossing experiments from previous studies. Abstract We report the finding of the freshwater leech Helobdella europaea in Spain for the first time. Three leech specimens were found attached to the European pond turtle Emys orbicularis. Helobdella europaea is not a blood feeder and, like all members of the genus, feeds on the hemolymph of aquatic invertebrates including snails and worms. Despite the fact that the original geographical distribution or source population of this species is unknown, the close relationship between H. europaea and leeches of the "triserialis" series (sensu Sawyer, 1986) suggests a New World origin.
