Hidden Mediterranean diversity: Assessing species taxa by molecular phylogeny within the opilionid family Trogulidae (Arachnida, Opiliones)

This is the first comprehensive study to evaluate the relationships between the western palearctic harvestman families Dicranolasmatidae, Trogulidae and Nemastomatidae with focus on the phylogeny and systematics of Trogulidae, using combined sequence data of the nuclear 28S rRNA and the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Bayesian analysis and Maximum parsimony do not reliably resolve Dicranolasma as distinct family but place it on a similar phylogenetic level as several lineages of Trogulidae. Some ammonites, formerly collected by René Mouterde within the Sinemurian and Pliensbachian beds of the “Calcaires de Laffrey” (Isère, France), are first described and illustrated in this work. The Sinemurian (Semicostatum chronozone) assemblage, chiefly constituted by Arnioceras gr. robustum (Quenstedt, 1884), is rather usual for the NW European faunas. Conversely, the Pliensbachian (Jamesoni chronozone, Brevispina subchronozone) assemblage is very peculiar. New occurrence of the family Hipponicharionidae (Bradoriida, Arthropoda), in the lower and middle Cambrian of the Cadenas Ibéricas, Spain

The bradoriids Hipponicharion aff, hispanicum and Wimanicharion aff. matthewi are reported from the lower and middle Cambrian strata of the Cadenas Ibericas, Spain. The genus Hipponicharion seems to be restricted to the Acadobaltic Province. Wimanicharion has been recorded from Sweden and Canada (Nova Scotia). The new discovery of Wimanicharion in Spain indicates its similar palaeobiogeographical distribution to Hipponicharion.

The genetic diversity of Phytophthora was investigated in soil and root samples of potted ornamental and fruit tree plants collected in nurseries located in Apulia and Calabria (Southern Italy) using metagenomic approaches based on Phytophthora genus specific primers. PCR amplicons containing the ITS1 region of the rDNA were sequenced using both a conventional cloning and Sanger sequencing approach and a 454 pyrosequencing protocol. Mycobiota and toxigenic Penicillium species on two Spanish dry-cured ham manufacturing plants

The present study reports the natural mycobiota occurring in dry-cured hams, and in particular on the incidence of mycotoxin-producing fungi. A total of 338 fungal colonies were isolated from three stages of production, these being the post-salting, ripening and aging stages in two manufacturing plants. The results show that fungi were more frequently isolated from the aging stage and that the predominant filamentous fungal genus isolated was Penicillium. Seventy-four of the 338 fungal strains were selected for identification at the species level by using morphological criteria and internal transcribed spacers sequencing. Saprolegnia multispora, a new oomycete isolated from water samples taken in a river in the Burgundian region of France

Saprolegnia multispora is described from water and floating organic matter taken in the Tille River, in the Burgundian region of France. The new species is illustrated and compared with other species of the genus. Distinguishing characteristics of S. multispora are the production of smooth-walled oogonia containing many subcentric oospores which are (1−) 11–70 (−100) per oogonium. The antheridial branches supplying the oogonia are predominantly diclinous, but at times these may be monoclinous and androgynous. Morphological features of the oomycete and the sequence of the ITS region of its rDNA as well as their comparison with related species are discussed in this article.
