A set of horizontal to vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) and multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) measurements, carried out in the Altavilla Milicia (Sicily) area, is analyzed to test a geological model of the area. Extant phylogeographic patterns of terrestrial circum-Mediterranean faunas were mainly shaped through Pleistocene range shifts and range fragmentations due to retreat into different glacial refugia. Abstract Grey Alder (Alnus incana (L.) Moench.) stands are distributed in the Carpathian area on alluvial deposits with sediments of different grain size as galleries along rivers and streams of the sub-montane to the middle montane level. The geological structure (Tertiary sedimentary deposits) in relation to the hydromorphological processes is the base for the structure of the stream valleys, which are in part very deep. Under the special microclimate of these deeper stream stretches with lower temperatures there are favourable conditions for the development of grey alder stands.

The water table is the top level of ground water by definition. Therefore surface water is an exposed part of the water table. Airborne measurements, resistivimeters determinations or perforation analyses can be used to determine the water table depth. These methods require, approximately, taking a sample per hectare, which is a very expensive and time-consuming procedure. Macrofaunal colonization of mine tailings impacted sediments

An experiment was conducted to study and compare macrofaunal colonization of thin layers of mine tailings. Experimental boxes filled with marine sediments capped with mine tailings were placed on the seabed and subject to colonization for six and twelve months. Three Norwegian mine tailings, representative of major production processes, were used. In addition, one set of boxes served as control and was not treated with tailings. The layer thickness of the tailings was supposed to represent the thickness in the transition zone between the sea deposit itself and unaffected sediments. This work analyses the contribution of the largest events to suspended sediment transport on the continental scale. The analysis is based on the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Suspended Sediment and Ancillary database. Data were obtained from 1314 catchments, comprising more than 2 500 000 daily events. The total number of days in the dataset amounts to 10 000 years. Catchments are of different sizes and belong to distinct climatic environments; they are distributed for the analysis according to USA hydrological divisions (HDs).
