The geometry of surfaces in 4-space from a contact viewpoint

We study the geometry of the surfaces embedded in ℝ4 through their generic contacts with hyperplanes. The inflection points on them are shown to be the umbilic points of their families of height functions. As a consequence we prove that any generic convexly embedded 2-sphere in ℝ4 has inflection points.

SPATIAL MULTIFRACTALITY OF ELECTRONIC STATES AND THE METAL-INSULATOR TRANSITION IN DISORDERED SYSTEMS

For the investigation of the spatial behavior of electronic wave functions in disordered systems, we employ the Anderson model of localization. The eigenstates of the corresponding Hamiltonian are calculated numerically by means of the Lanczos algorithm and are analyzed with respect to their spatial multifractal properties. We find that the wave functions show spatial multifractality for all parameter cases not too far away from the metal-insulator transition (MIT) which separates localized from extended states in this model. Two-view “cylindrical decomposition” of binary images

This paper describes the discrete cylindrical algebraic decomposition (DCAD) construction along two orthogonal views of binary images. The combination of two information is used to avoid ambiguities for image recognition purposes. This algorithm associates an object connectivity graph to each connected component, allowing a complete description of the structuring information. Moreover, an easy and compact representation of the scene is achieved by using strings in a five letter alphabet. Examples on complex digital images are also provided. © 2001 Elsevier Science Inc.

We show that the image of a proper closed continuous map, f , from an n -manifold X to an ( n + 1)-manifold Y , such that H 1 (Y; Z 2 ) =0 , separates Y into at least two connected components provided the self-intersections set of f is not dense in any connected component of Y . We also obtain some geometrical applications.

Infinitely many solutions for a perturbed p-Laplacian boundary value problem with impulsive effects

In this paper, we deal with the existence of weak solutions for a perturbed p-Laplacian boundary value problem with impulsive effects. More precisely, the existence of an exactly determined open interval of positive parameters for which the problem admits infinitely many weak solutions is established. Our proofs are based on variational methods.

When a convergence of filters is measure-theoretic

Abstract Convergence almost everywhere cannot be induced by a topology, and if measure is finite, it coincides with almost uniform convergence and is finer than convergence in measure, which is induced by a metrizable topology. Measures are assumed to be finite. It is proved that convergence in measure is the Urysohn modification of convergence almost everywhere, which is pseudotopological. Extensions of these convergences from sequences to arbitrary filters are discussed, and a concept of measure-theoretic convergence is introduced.
