2002

The aim of the Study: To analyze the outcome of patirnts with extragonadal (eg) GCT teated with TCG 91/98 Protocols. 45 pts were enrolled: 34 were females, 11 males; median age 17 months (range: 1-137 months)

THE ROLE OF SURGERY (s) IN THE TREATMENT OF GERM CELL TUMORS (GCT) IN CHILDHOOD. A Report from an Italian Multi-Istitutional Study (TCG-91)

1993

GCT account for about 3% of all solidi Neoplasms in children. Because of the confusion as to their classification, diagnostic apporoach and treatment, a multi-istitutional study was carried and a National Protocol for Diagnosis and treatment of CGT (TCG-91), approved by AIEOP, straded in January 1991.

STAGE I GONADAL CELL TUMORS (GGCT): OUTCOME AFETR THE SURVEILLANCE STRATEGY AS APPLIED IN THE ASSOCIAZIONE ITALIANA EMATOLOGIA ONCOLOGIA PEDIATRICA (…

2012

Suveillance strategy is a standerd option in stage 1° testicular GCT and suggested for ovarian GCT too. Worries regarding the relapse risk in ovarian are emerging. We here report on our series of stage 1° GGCT

Nuclear Medicine Methods in Scrotal Imaging

2011

In patients with acute scrotal pain scrotal scintigraphy can be used to exclude torsion of the testicle, which presents with unilateral decrease in activity on the affected side. The role of nuclear medicine methods, however, faded in the last years after the introduction of high performance color Doppler ultrasound equipment. Lymphoscintigraphy can be used in patients with testicular cancer to demonstrate the lymphatic drainage pathway of the neoplasm. Several studies suggest that 18FDG-PET/CT might have a role in the staging germ cell tumors, in identification of recurrent/residual disease, to monitor the treatment response and during the follow-up. Other investigations, however, did not c…

Decorin Expression and Oncosuppression in Human Embryonic Carcinomas

2019

Human embryonic stem cells in culture can transform into malignant, cancer-like cells exhibiting lesser differentiation. After transplantation, these transformed cells can form highly malignant germ cell tumors. In humans, germ cell tumors often appear at gonadal sites, like in the testis. In this study, we examined the expression of small leucine rich proteoglycans in normal and karyotypically abnormal human embryonic stem cells using a publicly available transcriptome data. We also examined the expression of the small leucine rich proteoglycans in healthy human testis and in different human testicular non-seminoma germ cell tumors using IST Online database. Furthermore, we localized the e…

Mature and immature teratoma: A report from the second Italian pediatric study

2015

Background. Teratomas demonstrate a benign clinical behavior, however they may recur with malignant components or as teratoma, and in a small group of patients prognosis could be fatal. After the ®rst Italian study, we collected cases of teratoma, alongside the protocol for malignant germ cell tumors. Procedure. Patients with teratoma were collected from 2004 to 2014. Teratomas were classi®ed according to the WHO classi®cations, as mature and immature. Patients with pathological aFP and/or bHCG, and those with a malignant germ cell component were not included. Results. The study enrolled 219 patients (150 mature, 69 immature teratomas) with a median age at diagnosis of 42 months. The primar…

Teratoma with a malignant somatic component in pediatric patients: The Associazione Italiana Ematologia Oncologia Pediatrica (AIEOP) experience

2010

Background Teratoma with a malignant somatic component (TMSC) is rare but described in adults, whereas information on pediatric presentation is sparse. Procedure The Associazione Italiana Ematologia Oncologia Pediatrica identified 14 cases of TMSC. Clinical files and pathology specimens were reviewed. Results The series (9 female, 5 male) showed the following disease: testis (2), sacrococcygeal (3), ovary (3), retroperitoneum (3), mediastinum (2), and foot soft tissue (1). Distribution of the somatic component was: carcinoma (4), pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (1), neuroblastoma (3), rhabdomyosarcoma (3), rhabdomyosarcoma plus liposarcoma, chondrosarcoma, neurogenic sarcoma (1), chondrosar…
