Strong-Verb Paradigm Leveling in Four Germanic Languages: A Category Frequency Approach
2010
We investigated strong-verb paradigm leveling in German, Dutch, English, and Swedish, and found significant differences in ablaut leveling and class change towards the weak conjugation. Swedish favors ablaut patterns retaining a difference between the preterite and the past participle, while German, Dutch, and English favor a common vowel for both forms. In change from the strong to the weak conjugation in Swedish, the preterite is more resistant than the past participle, while in the other languages it is the reverse. We provide a unified explanation for these facts based on differences in category frequency due to the prominence or lack of an aspectual distinction between preterite and pe…

An unpublished De lapidibus in its manuscript tradition, with particular regard to the Anglo-Saxon area
2007
Old Frisian skalk: A ‘Servant’ or a ‘Rogue’?
2017
The Old Frisian wordscalc, scalch, schalcis usually used in the sense of ‘servant, slave’. However, the word evidences a pejoration in meaning, being also attested in the Frisian written tradition in the sense of ‘ill-mannered person, villain, a bad guy’. The investigation of the occurrences ofskalk–along with a comparison of its Germanic cognates–will allow us to draw a picture of the semantic development of this word from medieval times to the Modern stage of the Frisian language. In the author’s opinion, the negative connotation ofskalkas an offensive epithet is the final result of a range of different causes, whose origin should be searched both in Frisian-Scandinavian contacts during t…

Radiopurity control in the NEXT-100 double beta decay experiment: procedures and initial measurements
2013
[EN] The "Neutrino Experiment with a Xenon Time-Projection Chamber" (NEXT) is intended to investigate the neutrinoless double beta decay of Xe-136, which requires a severe suppression of potential backgrounds. An extensive screening and material selection process is underway for NEXT since the control of the radiopurity levels of the materials to be used in the experimental set-up is a must for rare event searches. First measurements based on Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry and gamma-ray spectroscopy using ultra-low background germanium detectors at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (Spain) are described here. Activity results for natural radioactive chains and other common radionucl…
FILOLOGIA GERMANICA – GERMANIC PHILOLOGY Supplemento 2 - 2021. Incantesimi e formule magiche nella tradizione manoscritta germanica medievale / Charm…
2021
The volume collects contributions devoted to charms and magical formulas of the medieval Germanic tradition, studied in the light of the relationship with the manuscript context that handed them down and the historical-cultural milieu of which they are produced. The approach to charms and magical formulas of the Germanic world has developed on an evolutionary path that has from time to time favoured perspectives of different scientific categories, and has been faced on philological, linguistic, semantic-pragmatic, semiotic and historical-literary basis. The essays gathered in the volume offer different examples – but at the same time linked by some themes and a common purpose – of the magic…
Investigating the mechanical properties of GeSn nanowires.
2019
Germanium tin (GeSn) has been proposed as a promising material for electronic and optical applications due to the formation of a direct band-gap at a Sn content >7 at%. Furthermore, the ability to manipulate the properties of GeSn at the nanoscale will further permit the realisation of advanced mechanical devices. Here we report for the first time the mechanical properties of GeSn nanowires (7.1-9.7 at% Sn) and assess their suitability as nanoelectromechanical (NEM) switches. Electron microscopy analysis showed the nanowires to be single crystalline, with surfaces covered by a thin native amorphous oxide layer. Mechanical resonance and bending tests at different boundary conditions were use…
Conductive films of ordered nanowire arrays
2004
peer-reviewed High-density, ordered arrays of germanium nanowires have been synthesised within the pores of mesoporous thin films (MTFs) and anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) matrices using a supercritical fluid solution-phase inclusion technique. Conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) was utilised to study the electrical properties of the nanowires within these arrays. Nearly all of the semiconductor nanowires contained within the AAO substrates were found to be conducting. Additionally, each individual nanowire within the substrate possessed similar electrical properties demonstrating that the nanowires are continuous and reproducible within each pore. C-AFM was also able to probe the co…
