Seed germination in Abies nebrodensis (Pinaceae)

2019

Abies nebrodensis is a strict Sicilian endemic species, listed as “Critically Endangered” in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Seed production highly varies annually and among specimens. The species is affected by a very low seed germination rate, mainly depending on the large number of empty seeds (from 68 to 96%). The embryo presence in seeds increases with increasing seed size and weight. Optimal germination rate (61%) was achieved at constant 5°C in the darkness. The low proportion of embryos in seeds is a relevant threat for A. nebrodensis conservation, as it affects the intrapopulation genetic diversity and reduces the potential genetic variability of seed accessions preserved …

Conservation of forest biodiversity in Sicily: contribution of the University of Palermo Germplasm Bank (Italy)

2017

Germplasm Banks dedicated to the wild plants seeds conservation play a unique role in integrating the in situ conservation of endemic, rare or endangered plant species. One of the missions of the Seed Bank of the University of Palermo (HBP-Bank) is to support the conservation of biodiversity with particular attention to the spectrum of genetic diversity of plants belonging to Mediterranean habitat. Abies nebrodensis (Lojac.) Mattei is an relict species, consisted of 30 natural individuals, gathered in a small area of the Madonie Natural Park in Sicily (1500 -1600 m above s.l.), recorded on the checklist “TOP 50 Mediterranean Island Plants”. It is also one of eight conifers species criticall…

THE BOTANICAL GARDEN “BERNARDINO DA UCRIA” IN THE NATURAL PARK OF THE NEBRODI (SICILY) AND ITS MISSION TO CONSERVE, EXPLOIT AND SPREAD LOCAL AGROBIOD…

2016

In Sicily, the academic botanical gardens of Catania, Messina and Palermo have been historically exerting a multiplicity of activities ranging from maintenance of ex situ collections to plant conservation policy, practice and ecological restoration, along with more traditional functions related to education and academic research. In the last decade’s, two new botanical gardens the “Nuova Gussonea” and the “Bernardino da Ucria, were created in Sicily, with the aim to play more delimited, yet modern and complementary roles. The garden “Nuova Gussonea”, within the Etna Natural Park, is mostly devoted to collect and preserve the native flora of the Mount Etna, with a special focus on endemic an…

Pomological and quality traits of mulberry (Morus spp.) germplasm from Gorno Badakhshan in the Western Pamir

2017

The local fruit biodiversity can represent a good opportunity to maintain the agriculture and to develop economies in "marginal" territory such as those in the mountain rural areas. The genetic diversity of the Morus spp. is little known in the Western Pamir mountains, so that the objective of the present study was to improve the knowledge of the polymorphism of the species in the different poorly explored Tajik valleys by investigating the main quantitative and qualitative traits. Materials and methods - Six selected sites of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) region were investigated through field measurement on morphological traits of mulberry trees (both from wild and cultiva…

Ecophysiology of germination in Sicilian population of Ferula communis (Umbelliferae)

2010

Ferula communis L. is an umbelliferous plant widespread in the Mediterranean basin and particularly abundant in Sicily and Sardinia islands (Italy). In this species, two chemotypes have been distinguished: one is poisonous and responsible of hemorrhagic syndrome of livestock, known as ferulosis, while the other one (non- poisonous) has anticancer activity due to the presence of daucane esters. In Sicily the dry stem of this plant has commercial applications in special manufactured products. The object of the research was to investigate the germination ecophysiology of nine Sicilian populations of F. communis, in order to establish the correct germplasm conservation of the chemotypes economi…

The “Sicilian Plant Germplasm Repository” of the University of Palermo: 25 years of activity in biological conservation

2018

The “Sicilian Plant Germplasm Repository” was created in 1993 from the Department of Botanical Sciences of the University of Palermo (SGCR/PA) – today section of Botany and Plant Ecology of the Department “STEBICEF” - with the aim to preserve the genetic diversity of endemic or endangered native plants, species of economical relevance and wild progenitors of plant cultivars. The collections are mostly constituted by seeds, and were recently expanded with tissues and DNA accessions. The specific tasks of SPGR/PA include the short- and long-term ex situ conservation and exchange of seeds, the recovery of the phytogenetic heritage, the reintroduction of threatened or endangered species into th…

Caracterización Eco-geográfica de melloco (Ullucus tuberosus C.) En la Región Alto Andina del Ecuador

2018

Ecogeographic characterization of Melloco (Ullucus tuberosus C.) in the high Andean region of Ecuador

I musei naturalistici come presidi ambientali e culturali. L'Orto botanico di Palermo

2013
