On familiarity deficits in mild cognitive impairment: A reply to Migo and Westerberg

2013

ABSTRACTIn this brief response to Migo and Westerberg we explain why we think that their criticism of our previous research showing familiarity deficits in mild cognitive impairment patients (MCI) is not sound. More concretely, we have replicated the effect several times previously, and we justify statistically the fact that in the previous paper we had to combine two MCI samples to demonstrate a reliable familiarity deficit. We note that there are several studies showing conflicting results. However, although the basis for these discrepancies remains uncertain, a new report has replicated the presence of deficits in familiarity, and more importantly, demonstrated its correlation with struc…

Hypnose et neuropsychologie : quelles perspectives cliniques ?

2015

Centenarians in Western Sicily

1998

Progressive aging of general population recorded in Italy has caused an increase of the number of centenarians. Such high age is often associated with failure of many psychic and physical functions, and centenarians are therefore often not independent (partially or completely) and require particular care.

Latent structure of the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) in older adult populations: a systematic review

2019

Objective: The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) is a 20-item, self-report metric intended to measure depression. Despite being one of the most popular depression scales, the psychometric properties, specifically the underlying factor structure of the scale, have come under scrutiny. The latent structure of a scale is a key indicator of its construct validity, i.e. the degree to which the intended variable is captured. To date, a comprehensive review of the latent structure of the CES-D in older adult populations (≥65 years old) has not been conducted. We aimed to examine the latent structure of the CES-D in samples of older adults to assess its ability to capture de…

The Meaning of a “Sense of Community” in a Finnish Senior Co-Housing Community

2015

In the foreseeable future, alternative housing options will be needed to meet the needs of and answer to the wishes of older people. Co-housing schemes are developed to fulfill the need for a housing type that provides mutual support and social contacts while alleviating the isolation and loneliness often experienced in ordinary neighborhoods. This study on a senior co-housing community in Finland asked what a “sense of community” meant to the residents and how a sense of community becomes visible in daily life. For these residents, a sense of community meant not only living with like-minded people but also communal activities, doing things together, learning from each other, and having rec…

Elderly Parents’ Need for Help and Adult Children's Moving Decisions

2015

Recent changes in Finnish welfare policies have increased the need for family involvement in eldercare. This article uses qualitative interviews to study working adult daughters’ reasons for moving in with their parent(s). Coresidence was linked to the parents’ need for support, but also to the daughters’ life situations, family histories, the availability of welfare services, and cultural norms and values. The interviewees used the “familist” and “independent life” discourses in their speech. The familist discourse was used to argue for coresidence as a natural continuation of family traditions and life history, whereas the independent life discourse was used to legitimize the need for alt…

Lung cancer survival in Germany: A population-based analysis of 132,612 lung cancer patients.

2014

Lung cancer is the most common cancer-related death worldwide. In Germany it accounts for 25% of cancer deaths in men, and 14% in women. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of 5-year relative survival by sex, age, histology, and tumour stage in Germany representing a population of 26.7 million people. The study is based on a pooled German dataset including data from 12 population-based cancer registries covering around one third of the German population. A total of 132,612 patients diagnosed with lung cancer from 2002 to 2010 were included in the analysis. Survival estimates for the time period 2007-2010 were calculated using period analysis. Differences in survival between sexes…
