Physical activity of university students with disabilities: accomplishment of recommendations and differences by age, sex, disability and weight stat…

2018

Abstract Objectives This article aims to study physical activity and the achievement of World Health Organization physical activity recommendations in university students with disabilities, and to examine differences by sex, age, disability characteristics and weight status. Study design Cross-sectional data from a wider research project conducted at the Spanish universities from Autumn 2016 to Autumn 2017 were analysed. Methods The International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form was administered to 1103 Spanish university students with different disabilities. Nonparametric tests were performed to examine the differences in physical activity based on the interest variables. Results…

Psychosocial and environmental correlates of active commuting for university students.

2009

Abstract Objective To examine psychosocial and environmental correlates of active commuting to university (ACU) and explore its association with overall physical activity among college students. Methods The sample included 518 students (mean 22.4 years; 59.7% female) from two universities in Valencia, Spain. Weekly estimations of energy expenditure from ACU and total physical activity were obtained. Socio-economic status, self-efficacy, barriers to active transport, access to car and motorbike, access to public transport, walking and cycling facilities and distance to university were assessed. Data were collected April and May of 2009, using a self-administered survey. A structural equation…

RNA memory model: a RNA-mediated transcriptional activation mechanism involved in cell identity.

2010

Position-effect variegation (PEV) was discovered in Drosophila melanogaster in 1930 in a study of X-ray-induced chromosomal rearrangements. If a rearrangement places euchromatic genes adjacent to a region of centromeric heterochromatin, it gives a variegated phenotype that results from the random inactivation of genes by heterochromatin spreading from the breakpoint. After the establishment, the inactivation is henceforth clonally inherited. The vast majority of these modifiers were originally isolated in Drosophila as dominant mutations that suppressed or enhanced the variegation caused by a variegating white allele called white-mottled 4 (wm4). A large number of modifier genes alter PEV p…

Migration experience and mental health: A qualitative study in France and Brazil

2021

Background:The relationship between migration and mental health is complex and involves factors at different levels, as the individual history of the migrant, the collective history of their home country, the host society’s and their mutual past history. Even though the migratory scenario of France and Brazil has changed over the years, both countries currently host an important number of immigrants.Aim:The main objective of the present study was to describe and analyze the impacts of the migratory experience on mental health of migrants with different migration experiences and living in two countries: France and Brazil.Method:Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 participants, …

States of mourning: A quantitative analysis of national mournings across European countries

2018

Despite their growing incidence over the last decades, national days of mourning received curiously sparse attention throughout social sciences and death studies. This study investigates the 327 national mournings observed across European countries between 1989 and 2017 in terms of their national variance, temporal dynamics, typology of events that led to their declaration, and victimology. Drawing on a Durkheimian-inspired conceptualization of national mournings as political rites of solidarity and reconciliation, this article finds empirical support for the thesis that the frequency with which European countries declare national mourning is a negative function of a society's level of soci…

Prevention of Functional Decline by Reframing the Role of Nursing Homes?

2017

Institutionalization is generally a consequence of functional decline driven by physical limitations, cognitive impairments, and/or loss of social supports. At this stage, intervention to reverse functional losses is often too late. To be more effective, geriatric medicine must evolve to intervene at an earlier stage of the disability process. Could nursing homes (NHs) transform from settings in which many residents dwell to settings in which the NH residents and those living in neighboring communities benefit from staff expertise to enhance quality of life and maintain or slow functional decline? A task force of clinical researchers met in Toulouse on December 2, 2015, to address some of t…

P3‐335: Upstream of N‐ras (UNR) is involved in translational control of ADAM10 protein expression

2008

Background: The amyloid beta peptide (A ) is derived by proteolytic processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) by the beta-secretase BACE1 and gamma-secretase. In contrast to this amyloidogenic processing, APP is predominantly cleaved by the alpha-secretase within the A domain and this precludes the formation of A . We and other research groups could show that BACE1 protein expression is regulated by the 5’untranslated region (UTR) of the BACE1 mRNA, however little is known about the regulation of alpha-secretase. Similar to the 5’UTR of BACE1, the 5’UTR of ADAM10 consists of 444 nucleotides with a GC-content of 70% and two upstream open reading frames. We hypothesize that ADAM10, th…
