KIND-DAMA: A modular middleware for Kinect-like device data management

In the last decades, we have witnessed a growing interest toward touchless gestural user interfaces. Among other reasons, this is due to the large availability of different low-cost gesture acquisition hardware (the so-called “Kinect-like devices”). Human-to-human interfaces: emerging trends and challenges

We present a new research domain, human-to-human interaction (HHI) that describes how today's human interaction is largely indirect and mediated by a wide variety of technologies and devices. We show how this new and exciting field of design originates from the convergence of a few well-established research areas, such as traditional graphical user interfaces (GUIs), tangible user interfaces (TUIs), touchless gesture user interfaces (TGUIs), voice user interfaces (VUIs), and brain computer interfaces (BCIs). We analyse and describe current research in those areas and offer a first-hand view and presentation of its salient aspects for the human-to human interaction domain.

Creating Digital Musical Instruments With and for Children: Including Vocal Sketching as a Method for Engaging in Codesign

International audience; A class of master of science students and a group of preschool children codesigned new digital musical instruments based on workshop interviews involving vocal sketching, a method for imitating and portraying sounds. The aim of the study was to explore how the students and children would approach vocal sketching as one of several design methods. The children described musical instruments to the students using vocal sketching and other modalities (verbal, drawing, gestures). Perception and replication of planar sonic gestures

As tables, boards, and walls become surfaces where interaction can be supported by auditory displays, it becomes important to know how accurately and effectively a spatial gesture can be rendered by means of an array of loudspeakers embedded in the surface. Two experiments were designed and performed to assess: (i) how sequences of sound pulses are perceived as gestures when the pulses are distributed in space and time along a line; (ii) how the timing of pulses affects the perceived and reproduced continuity of sequences; and (iii) how effectively a second parallel row of speakers can extend sonic gestures to a two-dimensional space. The Italian Method of la drammatica: its Legacy and Reception

The volume The Italian Method of la drammatica: its Legacy and Reception includes the long and complex investigation to identify the Italian acting-code system of the drammatica used by nineteenth-century Italian actors such as Adelaide Ristori Giovanni Grasso Tommaso Salvini Eleonora Duse. In particular their acting inspired Stanislavky who reformed twentieth-century stage. The declamatory code of the drammatica was composed by symbols for notation of voice and gesture which Italian actors marked in their prompt-books. The discovery of the drammatica’s code sheds new light on nineteenth-century acting. Having deciphered the phonetic symbols of the code Anna Sica has given birth an investigation with a group of outstanding scholars in an attempt to explore the drammatica’s legacy and its reception in Europe as well as in Asia. At this stage new evidence has emerged proving that for instance the symbol used by the drammatica actors to sign the colorito vocale was known to English actors in the second half of the nineteenth century. By noting how Adelaide Ristori passed on her art to Irving’s actress Genevieve Ward and how Stanislavsky almost aflame moulded his system from Duse’s acting an unexplored variety in the reception of the drammatica’s legacy is revealed.Settore L-ART/05 - Discipline Dello Spettacolo
