In vitro testing the potential of a novel chimeric igg variant for inhibiting collagen fibrils formation in recurrent hereditary gingival fibromatosi…
2014
Gingival fibromatosis is a progressive enlargement of the gingiva. It may hinder oral cavity hygiene and result in underlying bone loss. The long-term benefits of surgery cannot be predicted. On the other hand, alternative, efficient and non-invasive methods are not available at present. The aim of this study was to test the inhibitory effects of a chimeric IgG variant on collagen fibril formation in the cell culture of gingival fibroblasts taken from a patient with hereditary gingival fibromatosis with a high propensity for recurrence. Gingival biopsies were collected from the mandibular gingiva and used for histological evaluation as well as to establish a fibroblast culture. A histologic…
CLINICAL STUDY OF TRANSVERSAL AUGMENTATION IN BONE DEFECTS OF THE MAXILLARY AESTETHIC AREA
2015
Scope: To outline the importance of autogenic bone graft addition for correcting bone defects in the frontal and lateral maxillary area, and for achieving outstanding esthetic results in cases of large bone defects. Materials and method: A total number of 478 argumentations has been performed in the implantology and dental clinic of the Emergency Military Hospital Sibiu between 2009 and 2013. Results and discussion: The transversal rehabilitation techniques of frontal maxillary ridges, representing 57.2% of all addressed cases, were the most frequent ones, justifying the fact that the frontal maxillary area, aesthetically sensitive, is of special attention for both patients and specialists.…
Clinical Assessment of the Effects of Low-Level Laser Therapy on Coronally Advanced Flap Procedure in the Management of Isolated Gingival Recession
2022
The aim of this randomized, controlled split-mouth clinical trial was to assess the effect of LLLT on wound healing after modified coronally advanced flap (MCAF) procedure for treatment of isolated recession-type defects. Fifteen patients with isolated bilaterally symmetrical gingival recessions (Miller’s Class I or Class II, or a combination of both) were enrolled in this study. After a modified, coronally advanced flap technique was implemented, a diode laser (810 nm) with a power of 120 mW irradiated the inner surface of the flap and the outer surface of the flap (low-level laser therapy—LLLT) after suturing for 5 min. This was repeated for the following four consecutive days…
Clinical characterization of gingival type of burning mouth syndrome:a cross-sectional study
2021
Background The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of localized intraoral neuropathic pain in a cluster of patients who reported the involvement of gingival site as only clinical manifestation of dysesthesia, analysing type and distribution of symptoms. Material and Methods Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) patients were enrolled in the study. Patients were screened through laboratory test and a conventional oral examination with periodontal chart. A questionnaire to collect data on symptoms, oral site involved, quality of sleep, anxiety was submitted to all the patients. Results A total of 236 patients were recruited. Seventy-six patients (32.2%) presented generalized type, where…
Self-inflicted oral soft-tissue burn due to local behavior and treatment
2010
Injuries to oral soft-tissues can occur due to accidental, iatrogenic, and factitious traumas. They may present as burns, ulcerations, and gingival recession. Chemical, thermal, and physical agents are the main causative agents for oral soft-tissues burns. The purpose of this case report was to illustrate the destructive nature of the local behavior and to describe the successful treatment of this case. A 20-year-old girl with severe pain and burning sensation in the left maxillary region, which was interfering with normal eating and speaking, was admitted to periodontology clinic. Upon questioning, the patient readily admitted traumatizing her gingival and cheek mucosa with alcohol. Treatm…
Oral myiasis in a cerebral palsy patient: A case report
2010
Myiasis is a rare condition caused by the invasion of tissues by the larvae of flies, mainly from the order of Diptera. Many cases of myiasis involving various human organs have been reported. Oral Myiasis is very rare in healthy persons. It occurs mainly in the tropics and is usually associated with inadequate personal and public hygiene; sometimes accompanied by poor manual dexterity. We present a case of oral myiasis in a mentally retarded, 13- year-old boy suffering with cerebral palsy. The diagnosis was based on the characteristic clinical features and the visualization of wriggling larvae. Large numbers of larvae were found in the gingival sulcus. Treatment consisted of manual removal…
Online audio-visual information on oral cancer for Spanish-speaking laypersons. A cross-sectional study
2021
Background Lack of knowledge and awareness of oral cancer seem to be the main causes of diagnostic delay. Online resources are often used by patients to obtain health/medical information. However, there are no reports on the quality and usefulness of oral cancer audio-visual resources in Spanish. The aims of this investigation were to disclose the type of information about oral cancer available, and whether it may be useful to shorten the patients’ oral cancer appraisal time-interval. Material and Methods Cross-sectional study undertaken at three video-sharing sites on October, 13th 2019. Keywords: “Cáncer oral”; “cáncer de boca”. The first 100 results in each viewing list were retrieved by…
