BYOTYPES AND RANDOMLY AMPLIFIED POLYMORPHIC DNA (RAPD) PROFILES OF SUBGINGIVAL CANDIDA ALBICANS ISOLATES IN HIV INFECTION

2005

ABSTRACT: A group of subgingival isolates of C. albicans recovered from Italian HIV-positive (HIV+) subjects were characterized both phenotypically and genotypically. Phenotyping of the isolates was carried out by a biotyping method based on the enzyme profiles, carbohydrate assimilation patterns and boric acid resistance of the yeasts. Genotyping was performed through randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Five biotypes were found among the 29 subgingival C. albicans strains examined. The predominant biotypes were A1R (55.17%), A1S (24.14%), and A2R (13.79%), while the biotypes A11R and A13R were represented by a single isolate each. RAPD profiles identified 15 genotypes among…

Histological differences in the adherence of connective tissue to laser-treated abutments and standard abutments for dental implants. An experimental…

2017

Background The goal of the current study is to assess the difference in connective tissue adherence to laser microtextured versus machined titanium abutments. Material and Methods Six patients were selected and each of them received 2 implants, one combined with a laser treated abutment and one with a machined abutment. After three months, the abutments were retrieved together with their surrounding gingival tissue for histological analysis. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of microscopical images was performed to assess the presence or absence of adherence between the soft tissues and the abutment, and the percentage of soft tissue adhered to the two different surfaces. Results Inti…

Periodontal disease and sjogren syndrome: a possible correlation?

2009

Sjögren syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by a progressive lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, especially salivary and lachrymal ones, leading to xerostomia, parotid gland enlargement, and xerophthalmia. The aim of this study is to describe the capillaroscopic pattern of the interdental papilla in patients with SS and to evaluate a possible correlation with periodontal disease. Methods: A total of 25 patients affected by SS and 25 healthy controls were examined. The patients with conditions that compromise microcirculation, such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, or some pharmacological treatments, were not included in the study. All the…

Effect of EDTA root conditioning on the healing of intrabony defects treated with an enamel matrix protein derivative.

2006

Contains fulltext : 49580.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND: Regenerative periodontal therapy with an enamel matrix protein derivative (EMD) has been shown to promote regeneration in intrabony periodontal defects. However, in most clinical studies, root surface conditioning with EDTA was performed in conjunction with the application of EMD, and, therefore, it cannot be excluded that the results may also be attributable to the effect of the root conditioning procedure. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of root conditioning on the healing of intrabony defects treated with EMD. METHODS: Twenty-four patients, each of whom exhibited one deep intrabony defect…

Local Gingival Blood Flow at Healthy and Inflamed Sites Measured by Laser Doppler Flowmetry

2006

This investigation aimed to: 1) develop a method to obtain reproducible laser Doppler flow readings (LDFRs) at the gingiva of the maxillary front teeth; 2) evaluate regional gingival blood flow (GBF) in healthy gingiva by laser Doppler flowmetry; 3) compare hand-held LDFR (H-LDFR) with splint LDFR (S-LDFR); and 4) monitor changes in GBF in experimental gingivitis (EG) and chronic gingivitis (CG).The LDFR, gingival index (GI), and plaque index (PI) were measured at 13 gingival sites (teeth #6 to #11) in 10 healthy volunteers (five males and five females), 23 to 34 years of age, over a period of 12.5 +/- 3.27 days employing a partial-mouth EG model and in 11 patients (three males and eight fe…

Effectiveness of a miswak extract-containing toothpaste on gingival inflammation: a randomized clinical trial.

2015

Objectives In this study, the efficacy of a miswak extract-containing toothpaste (Salvadora persica) on gingival inflammation was compared with that of a herbal and a conventional toothpaste. Methods Non-smoking outpatients with sulcus bleeding index (SBI) ≥25% and with periodontal pocket depths ≤3 mm were randomly selected and divided into three groups: M-group, miswak extract-containing toothpaste; P-group, herbal toothpaste; and C-group, conventional toothpaste. After instructing the patients to brush their teeth twice a day for 3 weeks with the assigned toothpaste using a flat-trimmed manual toothbrush, a thorough oral examination was performed by a calibrated examiner (EH). The primary…

Smile esthetics from odontology students' perspectives

2013

ABSTRACT Objectives: To analyze the perception of smile esthetics and its alterations in dental degree students; to determine whether there are differences in that perception among students in different study years on those courses and between genders; and to determine if the circumstance of having received prior orthodontic treatment could influence that perception. Material and Methods: Students (n = 192) in different study years of the dental degree course at the University of Valencia, Spain, analyzed two photographs of a patient in which, by means of computer software, midline diastema, upper and lower midlines, crown length of the maxillary right central incisor, occlusal cant, and “g…

Antibacterial susceptibility patterns of Porphyromonas gingivalis isolated from chronic Periodontitis patients

2010

Objectives: To test the antimicrobial sensitivity of Porphyromonas gingivalis to a panel of eight orally administrable antibiotics in chronic periodontal diseases and to evaluate factors associated with periodontitis in adult patients. Study Design: A total of fifty strains of P. gingivalis were isolated from one hundred and twenty adult patients with chronic perio-dontitis. Identification of bacteria was carried out by anaerobic culture and biochemical tests. Selected colonies of P. gingivalis were used to evaluate the antibacterial activities of penicillin, metronidazole, amoxicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, clindamycin, doxy-cycline, ciprofloxacin and azithromycin. Results: Most of …

Sclerotherapy for the recurrent granulomatous epulis with pingyangmycin

2017

Background Relapse of granulomatous epulis is common after surgery because of local irritations, hormonal level in vivo, or incomplete resection. Currently, if recurrence occurs, then extraction of the teeth adjacent to the lesion is commonly performed, which may influence the aesthetics or masticatory function. Thus, a more effective and less aggressive treatment method is urgently demanded, particularly for the recurring lesion. This study investigated the effects of the intralesional pingyangmycin (PYM) injections for the recurrent granulomatous epulis and assessed the complications. Material and Methods A total of 16 patients with recurrent granulomatous epulis underwent intralesional P…

Oral peripheral ameloblastoma: A retrospective series study of 25 cases

2018

Background Peripheral ameloblastoma (PA) is a rare and unusual variant of odontogenic tumor, which was described only in isolated case reports in literature. The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical profile, treatment and outcome of PA in a consecutive case series. Material and Methods A total of 25 patients with histologically confirmed PA from 2001 to 2015 were retrospectively reviewed in our institution. Results Of the 25 patients, 22 males and 3 females were identified (male: female = 7.3:1). The average age was 48.3 years (range 11-81 years) with lingual or palate gingival region being the most common site (76%). The course of disease was less than 6 months in 92.0% …
