Associations of temperament types and gender of early adolescents and teachers with adolescents’ school well‐being

2021

This study examined the role of temperament type and gender of adolescents and teachers in adolescents’ well‐being in school. The sample consisted of 677 Finnish students and 56 classroom teachers. Parents rated adolescent temperament and teachers rated their own temperament in autumn of Grade 6. Self‐reports of school well‐being among adolescents were obtained in autumn and the fall of Grade 6. The results showed that being a girl and having resilient temperament type predicted higher school well‐being. In turn, boys with undercontrolled temperament, who were otherwise at risk for decreased school well‐being, particularly benefited from having a female teacher with resilient temperament. O…

Early maturation and substance use across adolescence and young adulthood: A longitudinal study of Finnish twins.

2017

AbstractEarly maturation, indexed by pubertal development (PD), has been associated with earlier initiation and greater frequency of adolescent substance use, but this relationship may be biased by confounding factors and effects that change across development. Using a population-based Finnish twin sample (N = 3,632 individuals), we conducted twin modeling and multilevel structural equation modeling of the relationship between PD and substance use at ages 12–22. Shared environmental factors contributed to early PD and heavier substance use for females. Biological father absence was associated with early PD for boys but not girls, and did not account for the relationship between PD and subst…

Genetic and Environmental Influences Underlying Externalizing Behaviors, Cigarette Smoking and Illicit Drug Use Across Adolescence

2012

We investigated genetic and environmental influences common to adolescent externalizing behavior (at age 12), smoking (at age 14) and initiation of drug use (at age 17) using the FinnTwin12 cohort data. Multivariate Cholesky models were fit to data from 737 monozygotic and 722 dizygotic twin pairs. Heritability of externalizing behavior was 56%, that of smoking initiation/amount 20/32%, and initiation of drug use 27%. In the best-fitting model common environmental influences explained most of the covariance between externalizing behavior and smoking initiation (69%) and amount (77%). Covariance between smoking initiation/amount and drug use was due to additive genetic (42/22%) and common en…

Managerial irresponsibility and firm survival. Pivoting the company in the aftermath of a social scandal.

2013

This study is focused on the analysis of the factors that underlie managerial social irresponsibility scandals and the dimensions that influence the possibility to pivot the company back to success after a social scandal. Three characteristics distinguish organizational crises due to social scandals: (a) they often have such a significant negative impact on corporate performance to pose the very survival of the firm is at risk; (b) social evaluations of the firm determine both the emergence and the possibility to resolve these corporate crises; and (c) time is crucial, as the rapidity of the effective management of the crisis enhances the chance of its successful outcome. Thus, indications …

Setting-up tension in the style of Marantaceae

2008

The Marantaceae stand out from other plant families through their unique style movement which is combined with a highly derived form of secondary pollen presentation. Although known for a long time, the mechanism underlying the movement is not yet understood. In this paper, we report an investigation into the biomechanical principles of this movement. For the first time we experimentally confirm that, in Maranta noctiflora, longitudinal growth of the maturing style within the 'straitjacket' of the hooded staminode involves both arresting of the style before tripping and building up of potential for the movement. The longer the style grows in relation to the enclosing hooded staminode, the m…

Fusion of technology management and financing management - Amazon's transformative endeavor by orchestrating techno-financing systems

2020

Amazon became the world R&D leader in 2017 by rapidly increasing R&D investment. Its R&D investment in 2017 was double that of 2015, 5 times that of 2012, and 10 times that of 2011. This rapid increase continued in 2018, and Amazon accomplished a skyrocketing increase in its market capitalization, closing to being the world's biggest company. Such a rapid increase in R&D and subsequent market value has raised questions about how to conduct R&D and secure a large amount of funds needed for high-risk investments. Amazon has provided hypothetical answers to both of these questions. Amazon has been conducting innovative R&D to transform routine or periodic alterations into significant improveme…

Semi-strong efficiency of Bitcoin

2018

Abstract This research examines the semi-strong efficiency of Bitcoin in the Bitstamp and Mt.Gox markets, showing how the digital currency responds to monetary policy and Bitcoin events. On the one hand, we observe that Bitcoin has become more efficient over time in relation to its own events. On the other hand, Bitcoin is not affected by monetary policy news, highlighting the absence of any kind of control on Bitcoin. These findings are relevant for investors and policymakers since Bitcoin is a financial asset without any connection to the measures of central banks.

Crowdsourcing: An Application of Promotional Marketing

2015

Groups are more creative than individuals; therefore, they also contain more knowledge, and this assumption represents the central principle of crowdsourcing. The term “crowdsourcing” is a contraction of the words crowd (a large number of people) and outsourcing (the use of external assistance or help). The crowdsourcing concept was popularized and clearly defined in a Wired Magazine article published by the American journalist Jeff Howe in 2006, and since then, it has been implemented in a wide range of industries. Nowadays, with the proliferation of the crowdsourcing practices, it has become necessary to clearly define what crowdsourcing really is and what its specific limits are. So, whi…

The impact of digitalization on marketing communications measurement process : case of global B2B industrial companies

2011

The stature of marketing communications function is under a threat within the firms. As the board of management tends to demand the profitability of all business activities, marketing practitioners have for a long time been unable to credibly show the link between marketing communications actions and financial value. Fortunately, the digitalization has offered new insights and opportunities to make the marketing communications actions more measureable. “Everything can be tracked” is an often heard slogan when speaking of monitoring web users’ online behavior facilitated by web analytics software. However, it is questionable how well this slogan fits the marketing communications of Business-…
