Field Measurements and Parameter Calibrations of Propagation Model for Digital Audio Broadcasting in Norway

2018

During 2017, digital audio broadcasting (DAB) replaces frequency modulation (FM) broadcasting and becomes the only technology for national terrestrial audio broadcasting services in Norway. As Norway is the first country that replaces FM completely with DAB, it is of great importance to measure the signal strength of such a technology in massive deployments and to tune a simulation model as a reference for future studies. Therefore, field measurements of received signal strength are carried out in a typical Norwegian area in this work. Based on the data obtained from the measurements, a simulator with a recent empirical propagation model, namely, ITU-R P.1546-5, has been calibrated. The fin…

New method of grain-boundary extraction by directional optimal filtering: application to estimating creep in metals

2002

It is economically important for manufacturers of high- temperature machines to be able to measure creep so they can predict residual service life more accurately. This paper describes and refines an image analysis method for evaluating creep in laboratory test pieces. It is a preliminary study of how to extract relevant information for creep mea- surement by counting cavities. Sample preparation for quantification by image analysis is an important step determining the further development of the image analysis technique. Grain-boundary extraction, which in- volves directional information, is the major problem to be solved before measurement can be automated. The search for a crest-line extr…

New, fast, and accurate procedure to calibrate a 2-dimensional digital measurement method.

2005

Traditionally, dental casts have been measured by hand, with conventional calipers. Today, several digital methods are available for automatically measuring tooth size, but their accuracy depends on proper calibration. The purpose of this article is to introduce a fast and accurate procedure to calibrate a previously introduced 2-dimensional computerized system of measuring mesiodistal tooth size and calculating overall and anterior Bolton ratios. In this calibration method, the cast is digitized while sitting on a sheet of graph paper. The magnification of the paper in 2 axes can be easily calculated and hence the magnification of the dental cast digital image.

Film and digital periapical radiographs for the measurement of apical root shortening

2012

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy and agreement of scanned film and digital periapical radiographs for the measurement of apical root shortening. Study design: Twenty-four film and digital [phosphor plate sensor (PPS)] periapical radiographs were taken using the long-cone paralleling technique for six extracted teeth before and after 1mm of apical root trimming. All teeth were mounted using a typodont and the radiographs were recorded using a film holder and polysiloxane occlusal index for each tooth to ensure standardization during the different radiographic exposures. The film radiographs were scanned and the tooth length measurements for the scanned film and d…

Organizational Media Affordances : Operationalization and Associations with Media Use

2017

The concept of affordances has been increasingly applied to the study of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in organizational contexts. However, almost no research operationalizes affordances, limiting comparisons and programmatic research. This article briefly reviews conceptualizations and possibilities of affordances in general and for media, then introduces the concept of organizational media affordances as organizational resources. Analysis of survey data from a large Nordic media organization identified six reliable and valid organizational media affordances: pervasiveness, editability, self-presentation, searchability, visibility, and awareness. Eight media scales base…

The Impact of Internet and Social Media Use on Well-Being

2021

The present research examines the longitudinal average impact of frequency of use of Internet and social networking sites (SNS) on subjective well-being of adolescents in Germany. Based on five-wave panel data that cover a period of nine years, we disentangle between-person and within-person effects of media use on depressive symptomatology and life satisfaction as indicators of subjective well-being. Additionally, we control for confounders such as TV use, self-esteem, and satisfaction with friends. We found that frequency of Internet use in general and use of SNS in particular is not substantially related subjective well-being. The explanatory power of general Internet use or SNS use to p…

Numero 70 della rivista online Form@re

2010

Social Media Marketing and Value Co-Creation

2017

Nowadays social media and brand communities provide virtual places where the consumers can publicize their opinions about products and services and play an active role as marketers, advertisers, value creators through electronic word-of-mouth. Since most of the times these dynamics flow out of business control, in order to pursue firms' objectives, managers and marketers operating in many sectors look at the web social community with growing interest. The present chapter presents a system-wide analysis of the links and feedback mechanisms between the different aspects of value co-creation through social media marketing and brand communities. For the purpose, it is proposed a qualitative mod…

Identifying paths to audience success of media products: the media decision-makers’ perspective

2017

Research on media success factors is a fragmented field. Definitions, measures, and methods vary, and findings are often inconsistent. In an attempt to fill this perceived research gap, we distilled generic success factors of media products from the literature. Guided by theory and empirical findings, these factors were aggregated to complex concepts, building blocks of success that we further investigated in an exploratory qualitative study. We found that the building blocks are applicable to all types of media, independent of seriality and content types of media products. Subsequently the research question of this article is: Which building blocks of success are most important for media p…
