Noise estimation from digital step-model signal

2013

International audience; This paper addresses the noise estimation in the digital domain and proposes a noise estimator based on the step signal model. It is efficient for any distribution of noise because it does not rely only on the smallest amplitudes in the signal or image. The proposed approach uses polarized/directional derivatives and a nonlinear combination of these derivatives to estimate the noise distribution (e.g., Gaussian, Poisson, speckle, etc.). The moments of this measured distribution can be computed and are also calculated theoretically on the basis of noise distribution models. The 1D performances are detailed, and as our work is mostly dedicated to image processing, a 2D…

Camera-based measurement of relative image contrast in projection displays

2013

International audience; This research investigated the measured contrast of projection displays based on pictures taken by un-calibrated digital cameras under typical viewing conditions. A high-end radiometer was employed as a reference to the physical response of projection luminance. Checkerboard, gray scale and color complex test images with a range of the projector's brightness and contrast settings were projected. Two local and two global contrast metrics were evaluated on the acquired pictures. We used contrast surface plots and Pearson correlation to investigate the measured contrast versus the projector's brightness and contrast settings. The results suggested, as expected, the proj…

Global dynamical behaviors in a physical shallow water system

2016

International audience; The theory of bifurcations of dynamical systems is used to investigate the behavior of travelling wave solutions in an entire family of shallow water wave equations. This family is obtained by a perturbative asymptotic expansion for unidirectional shallow water waves. According to the parameters of the system, this family can lead to different sets of known equations such as Camassa-Holm, Korteweg-de Vries, Degasperis and Procesi and several other dispersive equations of the third order. Looking for possible travelling wave solutions, we show that different phase orbits in some regions of parametric planes are similar to those obtained with the model of the pressure …

PANDOR

2015

Digital Correlation Method Based on Microgeometrical Texture Patterns for Strain Fields Measurements

2005

International audience; Digital correlation method is widely used in experimental mechanics to obtain the deformation field. Currently this method is applied with digital images of the initial and deformed surface sprayed with black or white painting. Speckle patterns are then captured and the correlation can be made with high 0.01 pixel accuracy in 2D-cases. In three-dimensions, the stereo-correlation can be used with a lower accuracy. The work presented in this paper, is a first approach based on the use of a 3D laser scanner in the objective of three-dimensional strain field measurement. The digital speckle patterns are not given by gray level but from the micro-geometrical surface textu…

Know Beyond Seeing: Combining Computer Vision with Semantic Reasoning

2018

International audience; To date, computer vision systems are limited to extract the digital data of what the cameras "see". However, the meaning of what they observe could be greatly enhanced by considering the environment and common-sense knowledge. A new approach to combine computer vision with semantic modeling has been developed. This approach extracts the knowledge from images and uses it to perform real-time reasoning according to the contextual information, events of interest and logic rules. The reasoning with image knowledge allows protecting the privacy of the users, to overcome some problems of computer vision such as occlusion and missed detections and to offer services such as …

Automatic Timeline Construction and Analysis For Computer Forensics Purposes

2014

International audience; To determine the circumstances of an incident, investigators need to reconstruct events that occurred in the past. The large amount of data spread across the crime scene makes this task very tedious and complex. In particular, the analysis of the reconstructed timeline, due to the huge quantity of events that occurred on a digital system, is almost impossible and leads to cognitive overload. Therefore, it becomes more and more necessary to develop automatic tools to help or even replace investigators in some parts of the investigation. This paper introduces a multi-layered architecture designed to assist the investigative team in the extraction of information left in…

Customizing Semantic Profiling for Digital Advertising

2014

International audience; Personalization is the new magic buzzword of application development. To make the complexity of today's application functionalities and information spaces "digestible", customization has become the new go-to technique. But while those technologies aim to ease the consumption of media for their users, they suffer from the same problematic: in the age of Big Data, applications have to cope with a conundrum of heterogeneous information sources that have to be perceived, processed and interpreted. Researchers tend to aim for a maximum degree of integration to create the perfect, all-embracing personalization. The results are wide-range, but overly complex systems that su…

Structured Wiki with Annotation for Knowledge Management: an Application to Cultural Heritage

2011

International audience; In this paper, we highlight how semantic wikis can be relevant solutions for building cooperative data driven applications in domains characterized by a rapid evolution of knowledge. We will point out the semantic capabilities of annotated databases and structured wikis to provide better quality of content, to support complex queries and finally to carry on different type of users. Then we compare database application development with wiki for domains that encompass evolving knowledge. We detail the architecture of WikiBridge, a semantic wiki, which integrates templates forms and allows complex annotations as well as consistency checking. We describe the archaeologic…

An Ontology-Based Approach for the Reconstruction and Analysis of Digital Incidents Timelines

2015

International audience; Due to the democratisation of new technologies, computer forensics investigators have to deal with volumes of data which are becoming increasingly large and heterogeneous. Indeed, in a single machine, hundred of events occur per minute, produced and logged by the operating system and various software. Therefore, the identification of evidence, and more generally, the reconstruction of past events is a tedious and time-consuming task for the investigators. Our work aims at reconstructing and analysing automatically the events related to a digital incident, while respecting legal requirements. To tackle those three main problems (volume, heterogeneity and legal require…
