Mobile money and the impact of mobile phone regulatory enforcement among the urban poor in Tanzania

Mobile money provides a tool for survival, particularly in urban conditions shaped by city regulations that make microvending difficult for the poor. An analysis of 165 interviews conducted in two low-income neighborhoods in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania over 8 years demonstrates how interlocked layers of technology and interaction make mobile money services semiformal. Institutions and educators are massively and uncritically integrating digital curricular materials in their teaching praxis. This article aims to uncover whether health and fitness APP images convey or legitimize stereotypes linked to bodies, focusing on gender, race, somatotype and physical activity practice. We also analyse whether these apps are adequate for the recommended age or whether they are designed by physical education professionals. In questo lavoro si mostreranno i presupposti teorici e operativi per lo sviluppo di un Mobile Learning capace di coniugare didattica in presenza ed esperienze digitali, sfruttando Instagram come social media privilegiato per una proposta di un modello metodologico volto a strumentalizzare le funzioni multimediali e interattive interne all’applicazione. I risultati qualitativi del progetto di ricerca-azione Edu-social Algorithm mostrano una serie di contenuti mediaeducativi che evidenziano il potenziale pedagogico dentro il social media Instagram e la replicabilità del modello metodologico sviluppato.

Mobile phone use before and during the COVID-19 pandemic : a panel study of older adults in seven countries

The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in older adults’ mobile phone use from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic. The media displacement and digital divide approaches served as the theoretical frameworks of the study. The data were drawn from the 2018 and 2020 waves of the Aging + Communication + Technology cross-national longitudinal panel study. The sample consisted of older Internet users, aged 62 to 96 (in 2018), from Austria, Canada, Finland, Israel, the Netherlands, Romania, and Spain, who participated in both waves (N = 4,398).
