Data Compression Approach for Long-Term Monitoring of Pavement Structures
2019
Pavement structures are designed to withstand continuous damage during their design life. Damage starts as soon as the pavement is open to traffic and increases with time. If maintenance activities are not considered in the initial design or considered but not applied during the service life, damage will grow to a point where rehabilitation may be the only and most expensive option left. In order to monitor the evolution of damage and its severity in pavement structures, a novel data compression approach based on cumulative measurements from a piezoelectric sensor is presented in this paper. Specifically, the piezoelectric sensor uses a thin film of polyvinylidene fluoride to sense the ener…
Critical Experiences with Sport and Wellness Technology Digital Coach : A Study among University Students with Low Levels of Physical Activity
2019
University age students have been found to be in a high risk of disengagement with physical activity and therefore exercise promotion to this target group is important. Since today’s students are familiar with different kinds of digital technology, it is worth including personal wellness devices in physical activity promotion. This study explores critical experiences occurring during the implementation phase of a sport and wellness technology digital coach among university students with low or sedentary physical activity level. This study uses qualitative methods and is based on a thematic analysis of 30 interviews combined with the critical incident technique. The study reveals the experie…
3D Integration : towards high-performance innovative imaging sensors
2017
Nowadays, CMOS image sensors are almost exclusively architectured around analog pixels. A transition to purely digital pixels would significantly improve the performances of imagers. Unfortunately, such an approach is difficult to consider because it causes an oversized and unusable pixel for the consumer market. One of the promising ways to solve this problem of pixel integration is to think not only in 2D dimensions, but in 3D dimensions by distributing the different functionalities on several interconnected wafers. Thus, the work presented in this manuscript describes the design of a purely digital image sensor in CMOS 3D-IC 130 nm Tezzaron technology. This sensor is architectured around …

Design and evaluation of a 32-channel phased-array coil for lung imaging with hyperpolarized 3-helium
2010
Imaging with hyperpolarized 3-helium is becoming an increasingly important technique for MRI diagnostics of the lung but is hampered by long breath holds (>20 sec), which are not always applicable in patients with severe lung disease like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or α-1-anti-trypsin deficiency. Additionally, oxygen-induced depolarization decay during the long breath holds complicates interpretation of functional data such as apparent diffusion coefficients. To address these issues, we describe and validate a 1.5-T, 32-channel array coil for accelerated 3He lung imaging and demonstrate its ability to speed up imaging 3He. A signal-to-noise ratio increase of up to a factor…
Evaluation of humoral and cellular response to four vaccines against COVID-19 in different age groups: A longitudinal study
2022
To date there has been limited head-to-head evaluation of immune responses to different types of COVID-19 vaccines. A real-world population-based longitudinal study was designed with the aim to define the magnitude and duration of immunity induced by each of four different COVID-19 vaccines available in Italy at the time of this study. Overall, 2497 individuals were enrolled at time of their first vaccination (T0). Vaccine-specific antibody responses induced over time by Comirnaty, Spikevax, Vaxzevria, Janssen Ad26.COV2.S and heterologous vaccination were compared up to six months after immunization. On a subset of Comirnaty vaccinees, serology data were correlated with the ability to neutr…
Procalcitonin and long-term prognosis after an admission for acute heart failure
2014
Abstract Background Traditionally, procalcitonin (PCT) is considered a diagnostic marker of bacterial infections. However, slightly elevated levels of PCT have also been found in patients with heart failure. In this context, it has been suggested that PCT may serve as a proxy for underrecognized infection, endotoxemia, or heightened proinflammatory activity. Nevertheless, the clinical utility of PCT in this setting is scarce. We aimed to evaluate the association between PCT and the risk of long-term outcomes. Methods and results We measured at admission PCT of 261 consecutive patients admitted for acute heart failure (AHF) after excluding active infection. Cox and negative binomial regressi…
Histological evaluation of bone repair using beta-Tricalcium Phosphate
2010
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate bone repair in defects induced in the cranium of Wistar rats using ?-tricalcium phosphate. Study Design: In this research, we used 30 rats, randomly distributed in three groups of 10 animals (G1, G2 and G3), corresponding respectively to time of histological evaluation (7, 15 and 30 days). This was a paired study, a defect being induced in the parietal bone on either side of the median sagittal suture of the animals, being the left-hand side the experimental subgroup (filled by biomaterial) and the right control. The histological evaluation was performed by means of light microscopy. The collected data were submitted to the Fisher Exa…
FPGA implementation of a deep learning algorithm for real-time signal reconstruction in particle detectors under high pile-up conditions
2019
The analog signals generated in the read-out electronics of particle detectors are shaped prior to the digitization in order to improve the signal to noise ratio (SNR). The real amplitude of the analog signal is then obtained using digital filters, which provides information about the energy deposited in the detector. The classical digital filters have a good performance in ideal situations with Gaussian electronic noise and no pulse shape distortion. However, high-energy particle colliders, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, can produce multiple simultaneous events, which produce signal pileup. The performance of classical digital filters deteriorates in these conditions sinc…
