Tannin analysis of chestnut bark samples (Castanea sativa Mill.) by HPLC-DAD-MS.

2014

In the present investigation, an HPLC-DAD/ESI-MS method for the complete analysis of tannins and other phenolic compounds of different commercial chestnut bark samples was developed. A total of seven compounds (vescalin, castalin, gallic acid, vescalagin, 1-O-galloyl castalagin, castalagin and ellagic acid) were separated and quantified, being 1-O-galloyl castalagin tentatively identified and found for the first time in chestnut bark samples. Thus, this method provided information regarding the composition and quality of chestnut bark samples, which is required since these samples are commercialised due to their biochemical properties as ingredients of food supplements.

Experimental results from Al/p-CdTe/Pt X-ray detectors

2013

Recently, Al/CdTe/Pt detectors have been proposed for the development of high resolution X-ray spectrometers. Due to the low leakage currents, these detectors allow high electric fields and the pixellization of anodes with the possibility to realize single charge carrier sensing detectors. In this work, we report on the results of electrical and spectroscopic investigations on CdTe diode detectors with Al/CdTe/Pt electrode configuration (4.1×4.1×0.75 and 4.1×4.1×2 mm3). The detectors are characterized by very low leakage currents in the reverse bias operation: 0.3 nA at 25 °C and 2.4 pA at -25 °C under a bias voltage of -1000 V. The spectroscopic performance of the detectors at both low and…

On Cancer Cell Cycle and Universal Apoptosis Parameters Signaling Unravelled In Silico

2010

Here, cell cycle in higher eukaryotes and their molecular networks signals both in G1/S and G2/M transitions are in silico replicated. Systems control theory is employed to design multi-nestled digital layers to simulate protein-toprotein activation and inhibition in the cancer cell cycle dynamics in presence of damaged genome. Sequencing and controlling the digital process of four micro-scale species networks (p53/Mdm2/DNA damage; p21mRNA/cyclin-CDK complex; CDK/CDC25/wee1/SKP2/APC/CKI and apoptosis target genes system) paved the way for unravelling the participants and their by-products having the task to execute (or not) cell death. The results of the proposed cell digital multi-layers g…

In vitro morphogenesis from excised leaf explants of Digitalis obscura L.

1984

The morphogenic capacity of Digitalis obscura leaf explants cultured in vitro has been studied, noting factors promoting the differentiation of roots, buds and shoots as well as those promoting callus proliferation. Complete plant regeneration was obtained only by first culturing the leaf explants in a medium with NAA and BA to induce formation of buds, and subsequently transferring them to a medium without growth regulators to achieve the further development of shoots.

Surface Relaxivity of Cement Hydrates

2014

Numerous aspects of the physical chemistry of colloidal systems are conditioned by the solid–liquid interface, and this is also the case for hydrated cement systems. Estimating the surface area is thus essential for studying the kinetics of cement hydration and admixture adsorption. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation techniques have already proven useful for this objective, but, for hydrating cements at early ages, it is necessary to know the surface relaxivities of all of the individual phases present to correctly interpret the relaxation data. This paper reports the results of a comparison of NMR relaxometry and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller gas adsorption measurements on various…

Modification of the rate of formation and surface area of ettringite by polycarboxylate ether superplasticizers during early C3A–CaSO4 hydration

2015

Abstract Early C3A–CaSO4 hydration was studied in the presence of various amounts of two polycarboxylate ether superplasticizers differing in their grafting degree. Hydration and surface area developments were investigated by in-situ NMR relaxometry coupled with BET and DSC during the first 2 h after mixing. This study enables a quantitative comparison of the amount and the specific surface area of the ettringite precipitated along the C3A–CaSO4 hydration with or without PCE. The main effect of PCE is to strongly increase ettringite specific area for a variable period. These effects are clearly dependent on the PCE charge and dosage and are reduced when using delayed addition. In this conte…

CNS involvement in OFD1 syndrome: a clinical, molecular, and neuroimaging study

2014

Background Oral-facial-digital type 1 syndrome (OFD1; OMIM 311200) belongs to the expanding group of disorders ascribed to ciliary dysfunction. With the aim of contributing to the understanding of the role of primary cilia in the central nervous system (CNS), we performed a thorough characterization of CNS involvement observed in this disorder. Methods A cohort of 117 molecularly diagnosed OFD type I patients was screened for the presence of neurological symptoms and/or cognitive/behavioral abnormalities on the basis of the available information supplied by the collaborating clinicians. Seventy-one cases showing CNS involvement were further investigated through neuroimaging studies and neur…

The Future of Historic Centers in Egyptian Intermediate Cities: Towards guidelines of urban revitalization.

2014
