Video-based Word Problems or Modelling Projects—Classifying ICT-based Modelling Tasks

2021

Mathematical modelling tasks increasingly feature the use of digital tools and media. In this chapter, we discuss the wide variety of these. Until now, classifications for modelling tasks did not consider the use of tools and media. Therefore, we developed a new classification for ICT-based modelling tasks. One class relates to mathematics; the others differentiate across (1) modelling aspects unrelated to tool and media, (2) the task context, (3) the digital tools and media (CAS, Wikipedia, type of feedback, etc.) and (4) students’ anticipated activities guided by task regulations, such as group work or time restrictions. The classification was validated with three example tasks. A visual …

Methods of Digital Hilbert Optics in the Analysis and Objects’ Recognition

2016

This paper describes methods on how to increase the effectiveness of objects’ pictures identification based on correlation methods. The main concept of increasing the discriminant effectiveness is based on highlighting of characteristic points of recognized objects by applying Hilbert transformations. Study of the effectiveness of Digital Hilber Optics (DHO) have been performed on a set of aircrafts, whose models rendered first as binary images, and then as grayscale. It has been performed a very detailed analysis of requirements on resources of information system’s which would in a real world support the discriminatory decision of objects’ class for which the sample database has been creat…

"… But What Should {I} Put in a Digital Apparatus?" {A} Not-So-Obvious Choice: New Types of Digital Scholarly Editions

2017

We propose to develop / expand the concept of “digital edition of a text”. The specific value of a digital edition is not only in the digital form of representation of textual information: dynamic rather than static, resulting in better visual or practical usability, but it mainly lays in the ability to work with computational methods on the text and on the information it conveys. Therefore the digital edition of a text should aim to provide adequate data and functionality to further forms of processing. Hence the idea that the “digital scholarly edition” until now often identified with the “digital critical edition”, can also take other forms focused on other types of ‘scholarly research’:…

Reflexiones doctrinales en torno a las Clementinas Dispendiosam y Saepe contingit: El proceso sumario a la luz del utriusque iuris

2016

Summary procedure, resulting of extensive synergistic work carried out by the medieval legislators of both Laws, was an alternative process to the solemn, more agile and faster. The Saepe Contingit constitution represents the paradigm that will reach its full scholarly maturation on the Bartolus de Sassoferrato’s study about the Constitution Ad Reprimendum. The article briefly explores the steps that lead to the appearance of the summary Rite on the medieval Ius Commune, highlighting the role of Canon law, and in particular the legislative interventions of Pope Clement V, in the making of this process, from the decretals Dispendiosam and Saepe Contingit up to the mentioned Bartolus’s study,…

<title>Photonic vascular diagnostics by four-channel photoplethysmography</title>

2005

A four-channel photoplethysmography device was designed and built at University of Latvia to detect signals from different body parts and to analyze the signal shapes. The device consists of optical contact probes, interface, and a standard PC. Clinical tests were performed with occlusion patients having vascular problems at arm or leg arteries. Results showed significant difference in the pulse wave transit time in occluded and nonoccluded part of the body.© (2005) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Space counts! Brain correlates of spatial and numerical representations in synaesthesia

2018

Over-learned semantic representations, such as numbers, are strongly associated with space in normal cognition, and in the phenomenon called number-space synaesthesia. In number-space synaesthesia, numbers are linked to spatial locations in an idiosyncratic way. Synaesthetes report numbers as belonging to a specific location, or feelings that a specific location is the right location for that number. What does really differentiate synaesthetes from non-synaesthetes with respect to their number-space representation? Here we present a number-space synaesthete, MkM, whose number-space representation dramatically differs from that of controls. We examined the impact of spatial distance with res…

Multichannel single-output color pattern recognition by use of a joint-transform correlator.

1996

A novel method for performing color image recognition by the use of the coherent joint-transform correlator is introduced. The input plane of the proposed method is a spatial rearrangement of the separation into color channels of both the color input scene and the color target. This input plane is gray scaled and monochromatic, thus it can be displayed by the use of amplitude spatial light modulators to achieve real-time operation. The system provides a single output-plane result of the optical coherent addition of the separate channels’ correlation outputs. At the output plane no electronic postprocessing is needed, and the detection decision is achieved simply by the application of thresh…
