The prevalence of myopia has markedly increased in East and Southeast Asia, and pathologic consequences of myopia, including myopic maculopathy and high myopia-associated optic neuropathy, are now some of the most common causes of irreversible blindness. Hence, strategies are warranted to reduce the prevalence of myopia and the progression to high myopia because this is the main modifiable risk factor for pathologic myopia. Identity construction in ELF contexts: a case study of Finnish engineering students working in Germany

This paper explores connections between identity and language use in lingua franca contexts by investigating identity construction among Finnish users of English as revealed in interviews conducted both before and after a period spent in Germany. The focus is on the users' own stories of their language use and learning, and on the discursive construction of identities. The study draws on poststructuralist theories of identity construction, combining them with research that focuses on language learners' identity construction or on identity issues in contexts with English as a lingua franca. Uniportal bilateral video-assisted sequential thoracoscopic extended thymectomy

Standard video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has been reported as a minimally invasive approach alternative to sternotomy for management of myasthenia gravis (MG) associated with thymoma or thymic hyperplasia. Uniportal video-thoracoscopy is an evolution of standard multi-portal video-thoracoscopy for management of several thoracic diseases but its role for resecting mediastinal tumor remains under-evaluated. Herein, we describe our experience with bilateral uniportal thoracoscopic sequential extended thymectomy with case and video illustrations.

Tämä tutkielma käsittelee eri tiedekuntien opiskelijoiden ruotsin ja englannin kielen käyttöä opiskeluaikaisessa työelämässä sekä opiskelijoiden käsityksiä tulevaisuuden työelämän kielitai-totarpeista ja kielitaitovaatimuksista eri aloilla. Tutkimusmenetelmä on deskriptiivinen ja enimmäkseen kvalitatiivinen. Tutkimusaineisto ke-rättiin sähköisen kyselylomakkeen avulla keväällä 2012. Lomake lähetettiin kolmen eri tiede-kunnan opiskelijoille sähköpostilistojen kautta ja kyselyyn vastasi yhteensä 225 opiskelijaa. A versatile synthetic strategy for the preparation of multimetallic oxynitrides has been designed and here exemplarily discussed considering the preparation of nanoscaled zinc-gallium oxynitrides and zinc-gallium-indium oxynitrides, two important photocatalysts of new generation, which proved to be active in key energy related processes from pollutant decomposition to overall water splitting. Bioremediācijā izmantojamu baktēriju iekapsulēšana algināta gēlā

Mikroorganismu imobilizācija ir viens no risinājumiem, lai uzlabotu to dzīvotspēju. Darbā pētīta baktēriju asociācijas imobilizēšana algināta gelā tās ilgstošai uzglabāšanai. Pētīta māla, glicerīna un kapsulu inkubēšanas ietekme uz baktēriju skaitu un dzīvotspēju. Kapsulas uzglabātas 4 un 20 oC temperatūrā, pievienojot ūdeni vai CaCl2 šķīdumu. Konstatēts, ka mālu piedeva sekmē baktēriju dzīvotspējas saglabāšanos. Kapsulu inkubēšana palielināja KVV/g kapsulu apmēram trīs reizes. Netika konstatēta glicerīna un CaCl2 ietekme. Labāk dzīvotspēju saglabāja baktērijas kapsulās, uzglabājot tās 20 oC temperatūrā. Papildus jau zināmajām baktēriju asociācijas sugām – Acinetobacter sp. un Burkholderia …

Tutkielma pyrkii havainnollistamaan englannin kieleen kohdistuvia näkemyksiä, mielipiteitä ja asenteita kolmen eri sukupolven kautta, ja samalla tutkimaan, miten englannin kielen kasvava tarve ja näkyminen on huomattu ja otettu vastaan maaseudulla; vai onko asiaan ylipäätään kiinnitetty huomiota. Englannin kielestä, sen levinneisyydestä ja vaikutuksista muihin kieliin ja kulttuureihin on tehty laajalti tutkimuksia, mutta Suomessa tutkimus on ollut melko rajallista viimeaikoihin asti. Maģistra darba temats ir „Atbildību mīkstinošie apstākļi.” Maģistra darba mērķis ir izpētīt atbildību mīkstinošo apstākļu teorētiskos aspektus un šo apstākļu piemērošanu praksē un ar to saistītās problēmas, kā arī izpētīt ārvalstīs pastāvošo regulējumu attiecībā uz atbildību mīkstinošajiem apstākļiem. Maģistra darbā tiek aplūkota atbildību mīkstinošo apstākļu vēsturiskā attīstība, teorētiskie aspekti, piemērošana praksē, kā arī atbildību mīkstinošo apstākļu nozīme soda mēra noteikšanā. Nobeigumā aplūkots atbildību mīkstinošo apstākļu regulējums citās valstīs.
The meaningfulness of two curriculum-based national tests of English as a foreign language

This paper addresses the aspect of the meaningfulness of a national assessment in English as a foreign language, applying the fairness framework proposed by Kunnan (2018). We compared students’ performance on two receptive language skills of listening and reading on two subsequent national evaluations in Finland, taken by students at the end of compulsory basic education and at the end of general upper secondary education, respectively.
