Fragmentation in International Law and Global Governance : A Conceptual Inquiry

This article examines the concept and metaphor of fragmentation and its underlying assumptions in international law and global governance. After engaging with fragmentation historically, we analyze current debates through five conceptual perspectives. Fragmentation is often perceived as a process, a gradation, a process with a single direction, a prognosis, and normatively as either loss or liberation. These interlinked tendencies carry conceptual implications, such as making fragmentation apparently inevitable or provoking positive revaluations of fragmentation in terms of differentiation. Tiivistelmä – Abstract Globaalikasvatus kuuluu jokaiselle – niin lapselle kuin aikuisellekin – eritoten siitä syystä, että globaalissa maailmassamme vieraisiin kulttuureihin törmääminen ja yhteistyön tekeminen vieraita kulttuureita edustavien ihmisten kanssa on välttämätöntä. On siis tärkeää, että koululaiset oppivat suvaitsemaan ja arvostamaan vieraita kulttuureita. Multiple global changes in the form of knowledge and the change in the doctoral education create the need to examine the current practices of doctoral degree. The change forces discussion about the future of doctoral education and the future of the prospective doctors. The doctoral education has to answer the demands set for it.
