Coexistence of hidden attractors and multistability in counterexamples to the Kalman conjecture

2019

The Aizerman and Kalman conjectures played an important role in the theory of global stability for control systems and set two directions for its further development – the search and formulation of sufficient stability conditions, as well as the construction of counterexamples for these conjectures. From the computational perspective the latter problem is nontrivial, since the oscillations in counterexamples are hidden, i.e. their basin of attraction does not intersect with a small neighborhood of an equilibrium. Numerical calculation of initial data of such oscillations for their visualization is a challenging problem. Up to now all known counterexamples to the Kalman conjecture were const…

Developing cloud business models: A case study on cloud gaming

2011

Cloud computing offers new ways for firms to operate in the global market so that even small firms can compete in markets traditionally dominated by multinational corporations. A case study considers how, over ten years, a small firm developed a successful business model to compete in computer gaming. peerReviewed

Exact extension of the DIRECT algorithm to multiple objectives

2019

The direct algorithm has been recognized as an efficient global optimization method which has few requirements of regularity and has proven to be globally convergent in general cases. direct has been an inspiration or has been used as a component for many multiobjective optimization algorithms. We propose an exact and as genuine as possible extension of the direct method for multiple objectives, providing a proof of global convergence (i.e., a guarantee that in an infinite time the algorithm becomes everywhere dense). We test the efficiency of the algorithm on a nonlinear and nonconvex vector function. peerReviewed

Ensemble strategies in Compact Differential Evolution

2011

Differential Evolution is a population based stochastic algorithm with less number of parameters to tune. However, the performance of DE is sensitive to the mutation and crossover strategies and their associated parameters. To obtain optimal performance, DE requires time consuming trial and error parameter tuning. To overcome the computationally expensive parameter tuning different adaptive/self-adaptive techniques have been proposed. Recently the idea of ensemble strategies in DE has been proposed and favorably compared with some of the state-of-the-art self-adaptive techniques. Compact Differential Evolution (cDE) is modified version of DE algorithm which can be effectively used to solve …

An Information System Design Product Theory for Integrated Order, Transportation and Warehouse Management Systems

2013

Globalization, lead time reduction and cost pressures, and other factors make it nontrivial for most companies to devise and manage effective logistics services to meet client requirements. They are better off using the services of specialized third party logistics service providers. These providers compete fiercely and need to develop and improve their services continuously to gain competitive advantage. Integrating the logistics process for improving communication and coordination is the most feasible way for third party logistics providers to deal with these pressures. Yet, the extant literature provides little theoretical guidance for integrating the logistics life-cycle, including orde…

Real-time recognition of personal routes using instance-based learning

2011

Predicting routes is a critical enabler for many new location-based applications and services, such as warning drivers about congestion- or accident-risky areas. Hybrid vehicles can also utilize the route prediction for optimizing their charging and discharging phases. In this paper, a new lightweight route recognition approach using instance-based learning is introduced. In this approach, the current route is compared in real-time against the route instances observed in past, and the most similar route is selected. In order to assess the similarity between the routes, a similarity measure based on the longest common subsequence (LCSS) is employed, and an algorithm for incrementally evaluat…

Can back-projection fully resolve polarity indeterminacy of independent component analysis in study of event-related potential?

2011

a b s t r a c t In the study of event-related potentials (ERPs) using independent component analysis (ICA), it is a traditional way to project the extracted ERP component back to electrodes for correcting its scaling (magnitude and polarity) indeterminacy. However, ICA tends to be locally optimized in practice, and then, the back-projection of a component estimated by the ICA can possibly not fully correct its polarity at every electrode. We demonstrate this phenomenon from the view of the theoretical analysis and numerical simulations and suggest checking and modifying the abnormal polarity of the projected component in the electrode field before further analysis. Moreover, when several co…

Global, National, or Market? Emerging REDD+ Governance Practices in Mozambique and Tanzania

2016

This article examines emerging governance practices in the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiative. We examine three different general governance practices (neoliberal, post-national, and government-led practices) that have been applied in the interaction between international organizations and two REDD target countries: Mozambique and Tanzania. In these countries, we find that emerging REDD+ governance practices are a mixture of international organizations’ procedural practices and the target country’s established governance practices, whereas neoliberal practices are weakly expressed. These findings call into question the simplified assumption of re…

The Rocky Road of Growing into Contemporary Citizenship: Dewey, Gramsci, and the Method of Democracy

2015

Characterized by globalization, increasing pluralism, and new complexities of citizenship, the contemporary world poses challenges to the ways in which we conceptualize of the processes of searching for shared solutions to ever-complicated social problems. While the political rhetoric emphasizes the value of citizens’ participation, engagement, and “voices,” there are increasing feelings of frustration, incapacity, and disinterest on behalf of the citizens regarding the supposed eff ects of their political engagement. In order to conceptually grasp the problem of searching for shared solutions and the related challenges to education, we draw on John Dewey’s idea of the method of democracy a…
