The big picture: effects of surround on immersion and size perception.
2014
Despite the fear of the entertainment industry that illegal downloads of films might ruin their business, going to the movies continues to be a popular leisure activity. One reason why people prefer to watch movies in cinemas may be the surround of the movie screen or its physically huge size. To disentangle the factors that might contribute to the size impression, we tested several measures of subjective size and immersion in different viewing environments. For this purpose we built a model cinema that provided visual angle information comparable with that of a real cinema. Subjects watched identical movie clips in a real cinema, a model cinema, and on a display monitor in isolation. Wher…
The importance of pyramidal lobe in thyroid surgery
2008
Pyramidal lobe (PL) is an embryological remnant of the thyro-glossal duct; its incidence varies from 15% to 75% but data concerning its size are lacking and limited to autoptic and radiologic evidences. Aim of our study is to elucidate the intraoperative frequency, location and surgical management of the PL.604 total thyroidectomy were performed between 1999 and 2007 in Unit of General and Thoracic Surgery of the University Policlinico of Palermo. The intraoperative incidence of PL was 12% (57% male, 43% female, mean age 42.5 years), but only about 50% were identified preoperatively with ultrasonography (US) (4% false positive) or with Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy (8% false positive).I…
The supracondylar approach to the jugular tubercle and hypoglossal canal.
1998
BACKGROUND Circumscribed lesions of the hypoglossal canal and of the jugular tubercle still remain a surgical challenge. So far, transpetrosal, transcondylar suboccipital, and extreme lateral approaches have been used to access this region. These surgical procedures bear a high risk for neurological deficits. Therefore, we introduce a new minimally invasive extradural approach to the hypoglossal canal that also allows access to the lateral aspects of the jugular tubercle. METHODS After a paramedian retromastoid skin incision, a basal suboccipital craniectomy lateral to the foramen magnum toward the jugular tubercle is performed. With this approach the occipital condyle and the lateral osseo…

Tra diritto e politica: Andrea da Isernia e la Lectura al Liber Augustalis
2022
The essay analyzes and describes the commentary apparatus to the Liber Augustalis and the exegetical activity around the legislative work of Frederick II. Starting from the apparatus vetus, with the glosses of Andrea Bonello and of the mysterious glossator G., up to the ordinary gloss of Marino da Caramanico, the essay focuses mainly on the work of Andrea da Isernia. The Lectura Peregrina, composed at the beginning of the fourteenth century, is examined both in its content and in the various editorial forms in which it was published. Beginning with the editio princeps of 1472, by Sixtus Riessinger, the Lectura Peregrina underwent various editorial transformations until it was standardized a…

Archive: concepts words
2019
review of: Archive: concepts and words by Federico Vallacchi, Milano 2018 In the book of Valacchi you can see a proposal to reread the archival: the archives certainly have to do with history, which feeds on them, but Valacchi teaches us that they have a lot to be divided with politics, with the art of government, with civitas.
Special Issue of Journal of Manufacturing Processes on Advancing Manufacturing Processes Research at NAMRC 46
2018
During the refereeing process of papers submitted to NAMRC 46 this year, nine high-quality papers have been selected and fast-tracked to a special issue of Journal of Manufacturing Processes (JMP) entitled “Advancing Manufacturing Processes Research at NAMRC 46”. The selection of the fast-track papers was based on authors’ preferences, quality of the papers, reviewers’ recommendations, Track Chairs’ picks, pre-selection by the Chair of NAMRI/SME Scientific Committee, and final approval by the JMP Editor. The nine papers published in JMP are therefore excluded from the Proceedings of NAMRC 46 in Procedia Manufacturing. Nevertheless, these papers are presented in person at NAMRC 46. Details o…
