Innovations in savings and credit groups: evidence from Kenya
2007
Accepted version of an article published in the journal : Small Enterprise Development Copyright Practical Action Publishing: http://practicalaction.org/publishing/sed_journal This article reports from a church based Savings and Credit Groups (SCG) project in Kenya called Tuinuane. The project builds upon the Worth program of PACT, but has added some interesting and innovative features allowing country-wide outreach: 1) It piggybacks on a church. 2) Field officers have been avoided. Instead group leaders are screened and trained through a detailed implementation plan. 3) It makes active use of mobile phones in planning, monitoring and follow-up efforts. First impression misleads emotion recognition
2019
Recognition of others' emotions is a key life ability that guides one's own choices and behavior, and it hinges on the recognition of others' facial cues. Independent studies indicate that facial appearance-based evaluations affect social behavior, but little is known about how facial appearance-based trustworthiness evaluations influence the recognition of specific emotions. We tested the hypothesis that first impressions based on facial appearance affect the recognition of basic emotions. A total of 150 participants completed a dynamic emotion recognition task. In a within-subjects design, the participants viewed videos of individuals with trustworthy-looking, neutral, or untrustworthy-lo…

Recycled Tyre Rubber Modified Bitumens for road asphalt mixtures: A literature review
2013
AbstractNowadays, only a small percentage of waste tyres are being land-filled. The Recycled Tyre Rubber is being used in new tyres, in tyre-derived fuel, in civil engineering applications and products, in moulded rubber products, in agricultural uses, recreational and sports applications and in rubber modified asphalt applications. The benefits of using rubber modified asphalts are being more widely experienced and recognized, and the incorporation of tyres into asphalt is likely to increase. The technology with much different evidence of success demonstrated by roads built in the last 40years is the rubberised asphalt mixture obtained through the so-called “wet process” which involves the…
