Microtubules and the First Cell Cycle in Cultured Mesophyll Protoplasts of Nicotiana

1990

When a protoplast is excised and cultured in vitro, an organized pattern of cell divisions must be reestablished to permit organogenesis, including plant regeneration. However, in a number of species protoplasts have proved to be very recalcitrant with regard to cell division and/or plant regeneration. In an attempt to find means to overcome the regeneration problem in recalcitrant species we are investigating the processes leading to cell division and morphogenesis in mesophyll protoplasts of the model system Nicotiana. Of particular interest are the initiation of the cell cycle and the coordination of progress through the cycles as a prerequisite for subsequent morphogenesis. Mesophyll pr…

Targeting SARS-CoV-2 RBD Interface: a Supervised Computational Data-Driven Approach to Identify Potential Modulators

2020

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread out as a pandemic threat affecting over 2 million people. The infectious process initiates via binding of SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) glycoprotein to host angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). The interaction is mediated by the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of S glycoprotein, promoting host receptor recognition and binding to ACE2 peptidase domain (PD), thus representing a promising target for therapeutic intervention. Herein, we present a computational study aimed at identifying small molecules potentially able to target RBD. Although targeting PPI remains a challenge in drug discovery, our investigation highlights that interaction between SARS-CoV…

Periodic orbits of single neuron models with internal decay rate 0 < β ≤ 1

2013

In this paper we consider a discrete dynamical system x n+1=βx n – g(x n ), n=0,1,..., arising as a discrete-time network of a single neuron, where 0 < β ≤ 1 is an internal decay rate, g is a signal function. A great deal of work has been done when the signal function is a sigmoid function. However, a signal function of McCulloch-Pitts nonlinearity described with a piecewise constant function is also useful in the modelling of neural networks. We investigate a more complicated step signal function (function that is similar to the sigmoid function) and we will prove some results about the periodicity of solutions of the considered difference equation. These results show the complexity of …

Laparoscopic Treatment of Endoscopic Sigmoid Colon Perforation

2006

Perforation of the colon after colonoscopy is a rare but potentially lethal complication. It usually occurs when endoscopy is performed for therapeutic purposes. In these cases the election of the best treatment is difficult and still controversial. Laparoscopy is a new approach for diagnosis and treatment of this condition. We report a case of a patient who was initially treated laparoscopically after a colonoscopic perforation. A postoperative leak was detected and the patient underwent open surgery. Possible therapeutic approaches and a literature review are discussed.

Plantxel: Towards a plant-based controllable display

2018

The use of plants as a mean for both visualization and interaction has been already explored in smart environments. In this work, we explore the possibility of constructing a controllable dynamic plant-based display using thigmonastic plants, i.e. plants that change the shape and position of their leaves as a response to external stimuli. As an initial step towards this vision, we first introduce our approach of building a plant-based pixel (plant-pixel, or plantxel), and the principles of composing a plantxel-based public display. We then present the results of a feasibility study conducted with Mimosa spegazzinii plants, showing that our approach can achieve an acceptable contrast ratio, …

Organismi geneticamente modificati: definizioni e finalità.

2013

Article 2 of the European Directive 2011/18/EC defines a genetically modified organism (GMO) a san organism in which the genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occuirr naturally by inserting DNA fragments from one organism's gene into the chromosomes of another, changing its genetic expression. In the field of animal and plants biotechnology there are different application areas of genetic engineering such as improving the quantity and quality of argicultural production, pharmaceutical production in more sustainable ways or applications in environmental field.
