Kontinente Harnableitung und Schwangerschaft

1995

We report on our experience with 7 pregnancies in 6 women who previously underwent reconstruction of the urinary tract with a continent urinary diversion using an ileo caecal segment (Mainz-Pouch I), ureterosigmoidostomy or bladder augmentation. Urinary tract infection and upper tract dilatation were the only complications during pregnancy which required bilateral nephrostomies in one case. All other sequelae were handled conservatively. The continence mechanisms were not compromised during pregnancy or delivery. Deliveries were vaginal in two cases and by Caesarean section in five. All seven newborn were healthy. Pregnancy is not contraindicated after any type of urinary diversion includin…

Water maze performance, exploratory activity, inhibitory avoidance and hippocampal plasticity in aged superior and inferior learners

2002

In 28- to 30-month-old rats, in vitro short-term and long-term potentiation (STP and LTP) were measured in area CA1 of the hippocampus in seven superior and seven inferior learners, that were selected from a pool of 40 rats based on water maze escape performance over a period of 9 days. The aim was to examine whether levels of STP and LTP could account for group differences in learning of water maze escape, spatial preference and wall (thigmotaxis)-avoidance and in short-term retention of an inhibitory avoidance task. There was no significant group difference in open-field exploration, i.e. the number of rearings. In contrast to expectation, the superior and inferior learners did not differ…

Definition of the Rectum An International, Expert-based Delphi Consensus

2019

Mini: A radiological, anatomic distinction between the rectum and sigmoid colon was agreed by consensus of international experts in rectal cancer using the Delphi Technique. Use of this landmark, “the sigmoid take-off,” may harmonize efforts in research and clinical practice to improve patient outcomes. Background: The wide global variation in the definition of the rectum has led to significant inconsistencies in trial recruitment, clinical management, and outcomes. Surgical technique and use of preoperative treatment for a cancer of the rectum and sigmoid colon are radically different and dependent on the local definitions employed by the clinical team. A consensus definition of the rectum…

Mainz Pouch II technique: 10 years’ experience

2004

In this section, the use of the Mainz Pouch II is examined in some detail, from Mainz (where it originated), and from London. Both groups of authors found the procedure to be valuable and helpful, and critically assess the results and complications. OBJECTIVE To report the long-term results with the Mainz Pouch II procedure. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between 1990 and 2000 a Mainz Pouch II ureterosigmoidostomy was used in 123 patients (49 females and 74 males, mean age 43.6 years, range: 1–73). The indications for urinary diversion were cystectomy for bladder cancer in 92 patients, bladder exstrophy and/or incontinent epispadias in 26, irreparable traumatic loss of the sphincteric urethra in four…

Radical Surgery in Children and Adolescents with Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Lower Urinary Tract Using Orthotopic Bladder Substitution and Heterotopic Ur…

2008

Abstract Purpose Children with rhabdomyosarcoma(RMS)of the bladder/prostate can be treated by radical or organ sparing surgery both in combination with chemotherapy ± radiation therapy. In this retrospective study we analyzed the outcome with special attention to radical surgery and urinary diversion (UD). Material and Methods 24/32 patients with RMS of the genitourinary tract had RMS of the bladder (n=14) or prostate (n=10). 8 patients were stage II, 11 stage III and 5 stage IV. In 18/24 with RMS of the bladder/prostate, radical surgery and urinary diversion was performed. 3 had chemotherapy only, 2 in combination with radiotherapy. One patient underwent partial cystectomy. For UD: uretero…

Passagere Kolostomieanlagen nach Eingriffen am Colon Sigmoideum und Rektum—Sind Sie Noch Gerechtfertigt?

1997

Abstract Primary anastomosis is increasingly favored even in emergency colorectal surgery. Two-stage procedures are frequently considered obsolete. The aim of this study is to define conditions when a two-staged operative strategy with a temporary colostomy is still appropriate. We analyzed a series of 126 patients who were treated by a colostomy following resection and subsequent closure of the colostomy. In 44 cases the primary operation was a Hartmann resection, in 39 cases a resection with colostomy and mucous fistula and in 43 cases a resection with primary anastomosis and proximal loop colostomy. Complications of diverticular or neoplastic disease were generally managed by resection w…

Applications of Ureterosigmoidostomy in Bladder Exstrophy

1999

Until 1994, 95 patients with bladder exstrophy and 20 with incontinent epispadias were operated upon at our department. During the last years more and more exstrophycripples were referred to our institution after primary treatment elsewhere. Thus a total of 56 of the 104 patients had a secondary treatment after failure or unsatisfactory treatment. In contrast to many other institutions, our standard procedure was primary ureterosigmoidostomy and, since 1990 it is completely replaced by a modification of it, the sigma rectum pouch (Mainz Pouch II). After failed primary bladder closure and in patients with short or pathological ureters or insufficient anal sphincter function, we prefer an ile…

Electronystagmography in the diagnosis of central vertigo.

2011

Objective: Determine the efficacy and applicability of electronystagmography (ENG) testing in the differential diagnosis between peripheral and central vertigo, through the visual-vestibular interaction test, in patients with vertigo.Method: Patients were submitted to ENG recording. Patients sat on a rotatory chair, which was placed in the middle of a rotary rotatory cylindrical chamber. The rotatory chamber was driven by a direct current engine, which turned it clockwise and counterclockwise, and its internal area was covered with 32 black vertical contrast. Results: All patients underwent rotatory vestibular stimulation by Stop test (VOR), optokinetic stimulation (OKN), and contemporary ro…
