Echinostoma caproni: intestinal pathology in the golden hamster, a highly compatible host, and the Wistar rat, a less compatible host.

2005

The histopathological changes induced by Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) in a high (golden hamster) and a low compatible host (rat) were compared at 15 and 30 days post-infection. Infection of rats was characterized by a progressive increase in erosion of villi and elevated numbers of goblet cells, which could be related to the early expulsion of the parasite in a host of low compatibility. In contrast to rats, the number of goblet cell in E. caproni-infected hamsters was low, but increased numbers of neutrophils and mesenteric inflammatory cells were observed. This indicated that local inflammatory responses in hamsters were greater than in rats. An immunohistochemical st…

Is hospital discharge administrative data an appropriate source of information for cancer registries purposes? Some insights from four Spanish regist…

2010

Abstract Background The use of hospital discharge administrative data (HDAD) has been recommended for automating, improving, even substituting, population-based cancer registries. The frequency of false positive and false negative cases recommends local validation. Methods The aim of this study was to detect newly diagnosed, false positive and false negative cases of cancer from hospital discharge claims, using four Spanish population-based cancer registries as the gold standard. Prostate cancer was used as a case study. Results A total of 2286 incident cases of prostate cancer registered in 2000 were used for validation. In the most sensitive algorithm (that using five diagnostic codes), e…

Mid-sagittal plane detection for advanced physiological measurements in brain scans

2019

Objective The process of diagnosing many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's and progressive supranuclear palsy, involves the study of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in order to identify and locate morphological markers that can highlight the health status of the subject. A fundamental step in the pre-processing and analysis of MRI scans is the identification of the mid-sagittal plane, which corresponds to the mid-brain and allows a coordinate reference system for the whole MRI scan set. Approach To improve the identification of the mid-sagittal plane we have developed an algorithm in Matlab® based on the k-means clustering function. The results have been compared …

Evaluation of the psychometric properties of “the Norwegian screening test for dyslexia”

2018

The aim of this study was to develop and investigate the psychometric properties of a screening protocol for Norwegian students in upper secondary school. The protocol was designed to assess skills that are at stake in dyslexia. It was administered to 232 students. In the absence of a “gold standard,” comparisons were made between students who reported normal literacy skills (n = 184) and literacy problems (n = 48). Significant group differences were found across all areas. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic curve analyses demonstrated good discriminatory power. The screening protocol met the standards for reliability and validity. It has the potential to be a useful …

Indacaterol vs tiotropium in COPD patients classified as GOLD A and B

2015

SummaryIntroductionAccording to current GOLD strategy, patients with COPD classified as groups A and B may be treated with inhaled bronchodilators, either long-acting β2-agonist (LABA) or long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA). However, there is little guidance on which class of agent is preferred and a lack of prospective data to differentiate the two.MethodsIn this study, we performed post-hoc analyses of pooled data from two prospective, controlled clinical trials comparing the LABA indacaterol and LAMA tiotropium in 1422 patients with moderate airflow limitation and no history of exacerbations in the previous year. This population fits the definitions of GOLD A and B groups and could …

Assessment of a qualitative serological assay to screen for allergic sensitization in elderly subjects

2013

We used a commercially available specific IgE qualitative serological assay to screen for allergic sensitization. Two hundred twenty-eight elderly subjects took part in the study. Skin-prick tests (SPTs) to a panel of relevant aeroallergens present in the study area were used as the diagnostic reference procedure (gold standard). Subjects with at least one positive SPT (≥3 mml n = 76) were considered to have developed an allergic sensitization. The qualitative assay correctly classified subjects as sensitized to an allergen or not sensitized in 257 of 288 cases (accuracy, 88.9%; 95% CI, 85.0-92.0%). The qualitative assay sensitivity was 70.0 (95% CI, 58.1-79.7) and specificity was 95.7 (95%…

Nitric oxide synthase neurons in the rodent spinal cord: distribution, relation to Substance P fibers, and effects of dorsal rhizotomy.

2001

The indirect immunofluorescent method was employed to investigate the distribution of neuronal nitric oxide synthase-like immunoreactivity(nNOS-LI) in the spinal cord of the golden hamster and to compare it to data obtained from rats. Immunoreactive neurons were found throughout the cervico-sacral extent in the dorsal horn (mainly in laminae I-III) and in the preganglionic autonomic regions, i.e., the sympathetic intermediolateral nucleus (IML), lateral funicle (LF), intercalated region (IC), the area surrounding the central canal (CA), and the sacral preganglionic parasympathetic cell group. While the distribution of immunoreactive cells was generally similar in both species, some differen…

Spinal relay neurons for central control of autonomic pathways in a photoperiodic rodent.

2021

Location and distribution of spinal sympathetic preganglionic neurons projecting to the superior cervical ganglion were investigated in a rodent model organism for photoperiodic regulation, the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus). Upon unilateral injection of Fluoro-Gold into the superior cervical ganglia, retrograde neuronal tracing demonstrated labeled neurons ipsilateral to the injection site. They were seen in spinal segments C8 to Th5 of which the segments Th1 to Th3 contained about 98% of the labeled cells. Neurons were found in the spinal cord predominantly in the intermediolateral nucleus pars principalis and pars funicularis. At the same time, the central autonomic area and the …

An experimental study of the reproductive success of Echinostoma friedi (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) in the golden hamster

2003

Viable eggs produced weekly per infective stage was used as a measure of the reproductive success of Echinostoma friedi during the first 12 weeks of infection in hamsters. The weekly reproductive success was not constant during the experiment in relation to the egg output and the proportion of viable eggs produced. The egg release started during week 2 post-inoculation, attaining a maximum during week 3. A decline in egg output was observed from week 9. Viable eggs were only produced from week 3 post-inoculation and a maximum was attained at week 4 of the experiment. A decline in egg viability was observed from week 9. Considering together the egg output and the egg viability, the maximum w…
