‘Full power despite stress’: A discourse analytical examination of the interconnectedness of postfeminism and neoliberalism in the domain of work in …
2013
Stories and images of successful career women and support for women’s advancement in working life have become hallmarks of contemporary postfeminist media culture, and especially of women’s magazines such as Cosmopolitan. While in previous research these features have been seen as signs for a new, popular feminism, more recently they have also been connected to the growing hegemony of neoliberal governance, a mode of power that ultimately aims at the economization of the social and is fundamentally exercised in and through discourse. The aim of this article is to investigate further the interconnectedness of these two phenomena, postfeminism and neoliberalism, in the domain of work, using …
Language, (em)power(ment) and affective capitalism : the case of an entrepreneurship workshop for refugees in Germany
2022
Abstract This paper seeks to advance research on the nexus of language, work-related training and affective capitalism by focusing on an entrepreneurship workshop organized for newly arrived refugees in Germany. Despite the occupational orientation, the primary objective of the workshop was not establishing a business but “empowering” the participants by guiding them to adopt “an entrepreneurial mindset”. To delve deeper into this ‘will to empower’, the study brings together the perspectives of governmentality studies, ethnography, discourse studies and affect studies. To investigate in more detail the evocation of the ‘entrepreneurial mindset’, the study draws on ethnographic data collecte…

Integrating Governmentality: Administrative Expectations for Immigrant Associations in Finland
2007
From the first half of the 1990s, and especially after the accession to European Union in 1995, immigrant authorities and administration have emphasized the significance of immigrant associations in integration of immigrants in Finland. The purpose of the associations from the administrative perspective is to socialize and activate immigrant communities and individuals according to basic political rationalities, such as security of the society, happiness of the population and individuals, and cultural pluralism. On the one hand immigrant associations are technology through which integrative government of individuals and communities is implemented. On the other hand, associations themselves…
Gubernamentalidad neoliberal y producción de conocimiento en la universidad: genealogía de una configuración subjetiva
2016
This article claims that any questioning of the conditions related to the feasibility of critical research projects needs to be done by taking into account the process of commodification of knowledge that has developed in universities due to the incorporation of the modes of neoliberal governmentality. This is a process which redefines the value and use that we give to produced knowledge as well as the subjectivity of university collectives. The way knowledge is understood and the subjective configurations that promote instrumental ways of relating to knowledge in an individualizing and competitive environment need to be taken into account. Therefore, we consider it politically relevant to …

Tiempos felices: Transformaciones en las tecnologías psicológicas de gobierno de la subjetividad
2020
This paper traces some inflections in the psy disciplines? discourses and technologies for the government of subjectivity during the last decades. It is focused on exploring different mechanisms through which psychological disciplines ?their discourses, techniques and practices? penetrate social life and contribute to establishing subject models consistent with transformations in the political and economic rationalities of late capitalism. Drawing on previous research in the field of gender politics and happiness discourses in the pop psychological culture, I track a line with three moments: i) the production of psychological individuality and identity normalization; ii) the proliferation o…
