Coinage and images of the imperial family: local identity and Roman rule

2013

In his speech “About harmony between the cities”, Publius Aelius Aristides, the famous orator of the mid-2nd c. A.D., admonishes the three most eminent cities of Asia — Pergamum, Ephesus and Smyrna — to put an end to their rivalries. He regards as useless their envy and struggle to be first among the cities in the province of Asia. He cautions against such rivalries, which could lead to an unwanted intervention by Roman authorities. He continues (Or. 23 [Keil = 42 Dindorf] 62): Is there a child or an old man so much out of mind that he would ignore that this is our present situation and that this is thank heaven the ruling law: one city, the first and greatest, has the whole world under one…

Echi libaniani nell’attività normativa imperiale?

2020

The research proceeds along the lines of the conductive thread constituted by the illegal visits to the governors which are testified in Libanius’ speeches 50 and 51, addressed to the Emperor Theodosius: Libanius makes the request for a law aimed at forbidding the scandal of such visits intended for achieving completely illicit facilities. Libanius puts on the cloths of the loyal citizen who informs the emperor about the events concerning his subjects, letting it somehow leak how many influences, pressures and conditioning factors were which the representatives of the imperial power had to contend with.

Storie di ordinaria corruzione. Libanio, Orazioni LVI, LVII, XLVI Introduzione, traduzione e commento storico

2010

Very High Fascioliasis Intensities in Schoolchildren from Nile Delta Governorates, Egypt: The Old World Highest Burdens Found in Lowlands

2021

Quantitative coprological analyses of children were performed in Alexandria and Behera governorates, Egypt, to ascertain whether individual intensities in the Nile Delta lowlands reach high levels as those known in hyperendemic highland areas of Latin America. Analyses focused on subjects presenting intensities higher than 400 eggs per gram of faeces (epg), the high burden cut-off according to WHO classification. A total of 96 children were found to shed between 408 and 2304 epg, with arithmetic and geometric means of 699.5 and 629.07 epg, respectively. Intensities found are the highest hitherto recorded in Egypt, and also in the whole Old World. A total of 38 (39.6%) were males and 58 (60.…

Stan techniczny i wykorzystanie zabudowań po klasztorach skasowanych w guberni wołyńskiej w latach 1832–1853 w świetle raportu wołyńskiego gubernator…

2019

W rzeczywistości przejęte ziemskie dobra klasztorne zasiliły skarb publiczny, a mienie z różnych powodów niezbywalne powiększyło majątek, pozostający w dyspozycji władz gubernialnych oraz Cerkwi prawosławnej. Władze długo nie doceniały znaczenia zabudowań poklasztornych. Dla większości z nich nie znaleziono nowego użytko…

Metafore animali, suoni onomatopeici e proverbi in alcune orazioni kata archonton di Libanio

2011

The work is presented as a reading tool aimed at analysing the relationship between signifier and signified in the animal metaphors in the orations of Libanius of Antioch. Greek man in animals isolated psychological manifestations in which he recognised his own. A prominent place was occupied by animals 'symbolic' of positive or negative qualities. Several such symbolic figures appear in Libanius' writing: the wolf is an animal-symbol, which emerges above all other animal metaphors due to the variability of its referents (from the governor to members of the claque) .

Analytical-numerical analysis of closed-form dynamic model of Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower plant : stability, oscillations, and accident

2021

This work is devoted to the analysis of a mathematical model of hydropower unit, consisting of synchronous generator, hydraulic turbine, and speed governor. It is motivated by the accident happened on the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower plant in 2009 year. In the analysis we follow the line of classical control theory approach developed in the works of famous scientists J.C. Maxwell, I.A. Vishnegradsky, A.A. Andronov, and F. Tricomi for the study of centrifugal turbine governor and electrical machines limit-load problem. It is shown that the occurrence of vibrations in the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydropower plant can be caused by nonlinear dynamics of the closed-form model. peerReviewed

Abusi, terrore, violenza. Qualche esempio di ‘disfunzionamento’ nell’amministrazione della giustizia nel IV secolo d.C.

2012

With all the rhetorical amplification of some formulas, realism and accuracy of the testimony by the rhetor Libanius of Antioch on the arbitrary administration of justice by the governors of Syriac metropolis impress the mark of cruelty upon the judicial practice of the time: tortures to wrest confessions or testimonies distinguished themselves by their unusual brutality. The study of the criminal justice system leads to a sociological analysis, although the juridical and social status was losing importance in light of the gravity of the crimen.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE DOCUMENTATION AND PRESERVATION OF THE MAYA CULTURAL HERITAGE. THE PALACE OF THE GOVERNOR AT UXMAL (YUCATÁN, MEXICO)

2020

[EN] One of the major challenges currently facing the architectural and archaeological heritage in subtropical World Heritage sites is its preventive conservation. Many of these sites are vulnerable to the adverse impacts of natural disasters and climate change. The risk is compounded by the fact that several of them are among the most iconic places in the world, and so they also face the threat of the excessive growth of visitors. What is more, in earlier times many were restored with unsuitable materials or using inappropriate techniques which have heightened the risk they face today. However, thanks to the new digital technologies of architectural documentation involving the use of laser…
