Cross-lagged relations between math-related interest, performance goals and skills in groups of children with different general abilities
2015
Abstract This study examined the longitudinal relations among math-related interest, performance goals, and math skills in different ability groups. The participants were 790 Estonian children who were assessed at Grade 2 and Grade 3. The results of SEM analysis showed that previous math skills predicted positively math interest and negatively performance-avoidance goals at Grade 3. Also, Grade 2 performance-avoidance goals were negatively related to subsequent interest towards math. Comparing low-ability students with other students indicated that Grade 3 interest was positively predicted by previous skills, and negatively by performance-approach and -avoidance goals specifically in low-ab…
A New Species of the Genus Crenubiotus (Tardigrada: Eutardigrada: Adorybiotidae) from Salt Spring Island, Strait of Georgia, British Columbia (Canada)
2022
Currently, the recently erected genus Crenubiotus (Adorybiotidae, Macrobiotoidea) includes only three species, all of which are characterised by dentate lunulae and cuticular tubercules organised in the band in the dorso-caudal part of the body. By means of integrative taxonomy, we describe a fourth species of the genus: Crenubiotus salishani sp. nov., from Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada. The new species has been found in the moss growing on rock and differs from the other species in the genus due to the presence of a median anterior mucrone in the third band of the oral cavity armature (OCA) and by the presence of evident thickenings on the eggshell connecting the neighbour…
Polish Adolescents’ Perceptions of English and Their Desire to Learn It
2016
In the process of foreign language learning the way in which students perceive the language may have a strong facilitative impact on their language acquisition process, especially when this perception is positive (Despagne, 2010). Unfortunately, it has not yet been clearly established whether the relationship between perceptions and foreign language achievement can be explained by the moderating power of the student’s desire to learn the foreign language. For the purpose of this paper it is hypothesized that the learner’s perception of the foreign language is strongly related to the desire to learn it, leading to higher achievement in cases of positive perception. In order to corroborate th…

Nykykoulussa on edessä muutoksia, kun perusopetuksen uusi opetussuunnitelma otetaan käyttöön vuoden 2016 syksystä eteenpäin. Uusi opetussuunnitelma painottaa eheyttämistä ja monialaisia oppimiskokonaisuuksia enemmän edelliseen opetussuunnitelmaan verrattuna. Käytännössä kaikkien koulujen velvoitteena on siis tarjota oppilaille integroivia ja monialaisia oppimiskokonaisuuksia opetuksessaan (Norrena 2015: 25, Perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteet 2014). Näin ollen opettajat alkavat suunnitella ja muodostaa uudenlaisia yhteyksiä aineiden välille, joten on mielenkiintoista nähdä, minkälaisia kokonaisuuksia ja minkä aineiden kesken yhteistyötä tulee tapahtumaan. Tämän tutkielman tarkoituks…
Central Region Upgrade for the Jyväskylä K130 Cyclotron
2020
The Jyväskylä K130 cyclotron has been in operation for more than 25 years providing beams from H to Au with energies ranging from 1 to 80 MeV/u for nuclear physics research and applications. At the typical energies around 5 MeV/u used for the nuclear physics program the injection voltage used is about 10 kV. The low voltage limits the beam intensity especially from the 18 GHz ECRIS HIISI. To increase the beam intensities the central region of the K130 cyclotron is being upgraded by increasing the injection voltage by a factor of 2. The new central region with spiral inflectors for harmonics 1-3 has been designed. The new central region shows better transmission in simulations than the origi…
The toughest animals of the Earth versus global warming: Effects of long-term experimental warming on tardigrade community structure of a temperate d…
2021
Abstract Understanding how different taxa respond to global warming is essential for predicting future changes and elaborating strategies to buffer them. Tardigrades are well known for their ability to survive environmental stressors, such as drying and freezing, by undergoing cryptobiosis and rapidly recovering their metabolic function after stressors cease. Determining the extent to which animals that undergo cryptobiosis are affected by environmental warming will help to understand the real magnitude climate change will have on these organisms. Here, we report on the responses of tardigrades within a five‐year‐long, field‐based artificial warming experiment, which consisted of 12 open‐to…
The relationship between behavior problems, gender, special education status and school performance in the early grades of school
2017
Liukkonen, Taru. 2017. The relationship between behavior problems, gender, special education status and school performance in the early grades of school. Master’s thesis in special education. University of Jyväskylä. Department of Education and Psychology. 41 pages. The purpose of this master’s thesis was to find out whether there are changes in the average level of behavior problems of pupils from 1st to 2nd grade and wheth-er gender or receiving part-time special education is related to the average level or possible change in behavior problems. Furthermore this study tested wheth-er behavior problems in the 1st grade predict the school performance in reading, writing and mathematics in th…
Regional concentration of university graduates : The role of high school grades and parental background
2020
In this paper, we analyse long-term changes in the regional distribution and migration flows of university graduates in Finland and Sweden. This study is based on detailed longitudinal population register data, including information on high school grades and parental background. We find a distinct pattern of skill divergence across regions in both countries over the last 3 decades. The uneven distribution of human capital has been reinforced by the mobility patterns of university graduates, for whom regional sorting by high school grades and parental background is evident. Our findings indicate that traditional measures of human capital concentration most likely underscore actual regional …
The correspondence between PISA performance and school achievement in Finland.
2022
In the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the key knowledge and skills needed in modern society are assessed. So far, however, little is known on the relationship between PISA performance and school achievement. Using Finnish PISA 2015 and 2018 data combined with the national register of education records, we studied whether there is correspondence between PISA performance and school achievement. The results showed that the correspondence between PISA performance and school achievement is moderate. The PISA proficiency scores correlated not only with the corresponding grades but also with the grades of other theoretical subjects, indicating that the PISA test assesses a …
Self-regulatory Efficacy and Foreign Language Attainment
2016
The foreign language learning process is lengthy and full of obstacles, while the most significant learning effects are quite delayed in time, and difficult to notice on a day-to-day basis. For this reason perseverance in self-controlling efforts may be of crucial importance to language success. It allows for a steady linguistic and cultural development of the student, allowing him to enjoy diverse, even contradictory opinions, leading to ultimate language success. The results of the research carried out with Polish secondary grammar school students (N = 621) demonstrate that only in reference to self-assessment of FL skills students with high levels of self-regulated efficacy significantly…
