Size effects of small-scale beams in bending addressed with a strain-difference based nonlocal elasticity theory

2019

Abstract A strain-difference based nonlocal elasticity model devised by the authors elsewhere (Polizzotto et al., Int. J. Solids Struct. 25 (2006) 308–333) is applied to small-scale homogeneous beam models in bending under static loads in the purpose to describe the inherent size effects. With this theory —belonging to the strain-integral nonlocal model family, but exempt from anomalies typical of the Eringen nonlocal theory— the relevant beam problem is reduced to a set of three mutually independent Fredholm integral equations of the second kind (each independent of the beam’s ordinary boundary conditions, only one depends on the given load), which can be routinely solved numerically. Appl…

Covariant approximation averaging

2015

We present a new class of statistical error reduction techniques for Monte-Carlo simulations. Using covariant symmetries, we show that correlation functions can be constructed from inexpensive approximations without introducing any systematic bias in the final result. We introduce a new class of covariant approximation averaging techniques, known as all-mode averaging (AMA), in which the approximation takes account of contributions of all eigenmodes through the inverse of the Dirac operator computed from the conjugate gradient method with a relaxed stopping condition. In this paper we compare the performance and computational cost of our new method with traditional methods using correlation…

Effect of the non-gaussianity on the measurement error for the filtered 1/f noise intensity

1999

To study the nature of the 1/f noise phenomenon in conductors, we seek a tool for testing different hypotheses of 1/f noise origin. The method analyzing the noise intensity at the output of a bandpass filter is discussed for the case of non-Gaussian processes. Data on measurement error are presented for the 1/f noise intensity in GaAs films and the Gaussian white noise emulated by a computer. A numerical model of 1/f noise as the superposition of telegraph random processes has been created. This method requires further improvement to check the noise for stationarity. Some ideas of how to do that are proposed.

The Electric Field Gradient and the Quadrupole Interaction

1984

The Mossbauer effect has become a popular method in analytical chemistry. In contrast to other techniques such as x-ray spectroscopy, NMR, EPR, and MCD where highly sophisticated evaluation procedures are applied to obtain reliable information on the chemical compound, the Mossbauer effect is generally used on a low level concerning the evaluation of quadrupole split spectra. This procedure on a low level is favored by the structure of the spectra especially the simple doublet of the 3/2 → 1/2 nuclear transitions in paramagnetic and diamagnetic compounds. The separation of the two absorption lines, the quadrupole splitting ΔE Q and the center of the two lines, the isomer shift, are easily d…

Search for Hidden-Sector Bosons inB0→K*0μ+μ−Decays

2015

A search is presented for hidden-sector bosons, $\chi$, produced in the decay ${B^0\!\to K^*(892)^0\chi}$, with $K^*(892)^0\!\to K^{+}\pi^{-}$ and $\chi\!\to\mu^+\mu^-$. The search is performed using $pp$-collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. No significant signal is observed in the accessible mass range $214 \leq m({\chi}) \leq 4350$ MeV, and upper limits are placed on the branching fraction product $\mathcal{B}(B^0\!\to K^*(892)^0\chi)\times\mathcal{B}(\chi\!\to\mu^+\mu^-)$ as a function of the mass and lifetime of the $\chi$ boson. These limits are of the order of $10^{-9}$ for $\chi$ lifetimes less than 100 ps over most of the $m(\chi)$ range, a…

Numerical study of the primitive equations in the small viscosity regime

2018

In this paper we study the flow dynamics governed by the primitive equations in the small viscosity regime. We consider an initial setup consisting on two dipolar structures interacting with a no slip boundary at the bottom of the domain. The generated boundary layer is analyzed in terms of the complex singularities of the horizontal pressure gradient and of the vorticity generated at the boundary. The presence of complex singularities is correlated with the appearance of secondary recirculation regions. Two viscosity regimes, with different qualitative properties, can be distinguished in the flow dynamics.

Nuclear-spin comagnetometer based on a liquid of identical molecules

2018

Atomic comagnetometers are used in searches for anomalous spin-dependent interactions. Magnetic field gradients are one of the major sources of systematic errors in such experiments. Here we describe a comagnetometer based on the nuclear spins within an ensemble of identical molecules. The dependence of the measured spin-precession frequency ratio on the first-order magnetic field gradient is suppressed by over an order of magnitude compared to a comagnetometer based on overlapping ensembles of different molecules. Our single-species comagnetometer is shown to be capable of measuring the hypothetical spin-dependent gravitational energy of nuclei at the $10^{-17}$ eV level, comparable to the…

Changes in the trajectory of the radio jet in 0735+178?

2001

We present multi-epoch 8.4 and 43 GHz Very Long Baseline Array images of the BL Lac object 0735+178. The images confirm the presence of a twisted jet with two sharp apparent bends of 90$^{\circ}$ within two milliarcseconds of the core, resembling a helix in projection. The observed twisted geometry could be the result of precession of the jet inlet, but is more likely produced by pressure gradients in the external medium through which the jet propagates. Quasi-stationary components are observed at the locations of the 90$^{\circ}$ bends, possibly produced by differential Doppler boosting. Identification of components across epochs, since the earliest VLBI observations of this source in 1979…

The structure of cosmic voids in a LCDM Universe

2013

Eulerian cosmological codes are especially suited to properly describe the low density regions. This property makes this class of codes excellent tools to study the formation and evolution of cosmic voids. Following such ideas, we present the results of an Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) hydrodynamical and N-body simulation, that contrary to the common practice, has been designed to refine the computational grid in the underdense regions of the simulated volume. Thus, the void regions are better described due to the combined effect of the Eulerian character of the numerical technique and the use of high numerical resolution from the AMR approach. To analyse the outcome of this simul…
