Commenting on Historical Writings in Medieval Latin Europe : A Reconnaissance

Modern scholarship seems to undervalue medieval commentaries on historical writings. This article intends to bring this phenomenon to scholars’ attention by providing a preliminary overview of the forms and subjects of such commentaries. It examines various types of evidence including not only a few commentaries proper (Nicolas Trevet’s on Livy and John of Dąbrówka’s on Vincent of Cracow), but also different apparatus consisting of more or less systematic interlinear and marginal glosses and commentary-like additions to vernacular translations, mostly of Italian and French origin. This study investigates the shifting terrain of pride, profit and power relations in minority language communities under contemporary globalisation. While “pride” associates linguistic-cultural heritage with identity and preservation, “profit” views these as sources of economic gain. In contemporary late capitalism, “pride” seems to be increasingly giving way to “profit”. This article reflects on the relationship between photography and migration from a cultural geography perspective, with particular reference to the visual construction of the Mediterranean border regime. The contemporary aesthetics of Mediterranean migration is one of the domains in which visual and social norms are most closely intertwined. The Franco regime carefully cultivated the image of José Antonio Primo de Rivera in a way which differed significantly from the approach adopted by other European dictatorships. Whereas other countries used the media, specifically cinema, to highlight the charisma of their current leader, the Franco regime concentrated on building up a posthumous image of Primo de Rivera as a fallen hero. For decades to come, Spaniards would be subjected to a funerary cult.
