I BACINI SIN-OROGENICI AL TETTO DELLA CATENA SICILIANA EVOLUZIONE TRA IL SERRAVALLIANO SUPERIORE E IL MESSINIANO INFERIORE

2014

Paleoenvironmental and tectonic evolution of the Liassic carbonate platform succession of Mt. Maranfusa (central western Sicily)

2011

The upper part of the Liassic carbonate platform succession (Inici Fm., Hettangian-Sinemurian), outcropping at Mt. Maranfusa (central western Sicily) consists of a sequence of peritidal limestones, overlain by Jurassic to Cenozoic pelagic limestones and their siliciclastic Tertiary covers. The good exposure of this succession, pertaining to the trapanese domain, in the area between Palermo and Sciacca mountains, allowed to study in detail the facies sequences and structural features of the carbonate platform and of the sedimentary dikes, in order to improve knowledge on its paleoenvironmental and tectonic evolution. The Inici Fm. is constituted by subtidal cyclic sequences of wackestone\pac…

Perforazione della Caldera dei Campi Flegrei - Una proposta anfibia IODP-ICDP

2018

Active calderas are major volcanic features of the Earth’s crust associated with shallow magma reservoirs, high geothermal gradients, and geodynamic unrests often documented through historical time. As large caldera-forming eruptions are also among the most catastrophic events that may affect the Earth’s surface, calderas are ostensibly the sites of major interest for both the scientific community and governmental institutions worldwide. The Campi Flegrei is an active volcanic area located west of the city of Naples, largely on the continental shelf of the Eastern Tyrrhenian margin that has been characterized by dominantly explosive eruptions during the latest Quaternary. This is one among …

A possible bridge between Adria and Africa: New palaeobiogeographic and stratigraphic constraints on the Mesozoic palaeogeography of the Central Medi…

2010

Abstract Dinosaur records in central and southern Italy testify to the occurrence of a diverse dinosaur fauna on the Apennine and Apulian carbonate platforms at least from the Tithonian to the Santonian. Most of the palaeogeographic reconstructions show these domains as topographically isolated areas, separated by deep pelagic basins and far from emerged continental areas. Thus, they hardly justify the long-lasting occurrence of these terrestrial vertebrates. Recent studies on the Mesozoic Panormide Carbonate Platform (western Sicily) yielded important stratigraphical and palaeontological data, which provide evidence for a convincing explanation of this unresolved problem. The recent discov…

Facies and geometry of an Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous carbonate rimmed-shelf system from Northwestern Sicily

2011

Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous carbonate shallow-water successions, several hundreds of meters thick, outcropping in the Palermo Mountains (NW Sicily, Italy), are analyzed in their sedimentological features for environmental reconstructions. In the Palermo Mts., the northernmost thrust system of the western Sicily fold and thrust belt, tectonic bodies, consisting of Upper Triassic-to-Eocene shallow-water carbonates (Panormide carbonate platform), outcrop. Detailed facies and microfacies analyses, stratigraphic measurements and physical stratigraphy studies of the Tithonian-Neocomian carbonates point out the occurrence of several lithofacies, from tidal flat to reef environments. Due to the…

Comparing marine geology and coastal geomorphology vertical tectonic data, a case study between Acquedolci and Patti (Messina)

2011

The study of new data on vertical movements show a complex geologic response in a restricted sector of coastal area between Acquedolci and Patti (north-eastern Sicily). Different surveys allowed to the recognition of morphological, biological and archaeological markers of paleo-sea level. The analysis of these markers and the absolute datings performed, allowed to reconstruct the history of vertical deformation of this sector but only the comparison among coastal geomorphological data and marine geological data of platform-scarp continental system associates, allowed to find the necessary keys words to explain the geologic complexity of this sector.

Spatial extent of recent vertical tectonic motions misured in NE Sicily coastal area. Insights from marine geology and coastal geomorphology studies.

2011

Vertical position of sea-level, pointed out by related deposits and morphologies, provide useful markers to estimate tectonic uplift rates. For the Holocene very high uplift rates are misured in the northeast Sicily coast (Antonioli et al., 2009). This study compare vertical tectonic movements and marine geology data in the coastal sector between Capo d’Orlando and Brolo (NE Sicily); tectonic lineaments show different trends both onland (Nigro & Sulli, 1995) and offshore (Nicolich et al.,1982) and also the morphological response follow closely this difference. The geomorphologic survey provided data on Holocene uplift rates. We studied an archaeological ancient quarry of grinding wheels for…
