The Role of the Local Atomic Order and Boundary Effects on the Electrical Transport of Ceria

2014

Heavily acceptor doped ceria is a material of great relevance for applications in solid oxide fuel cells and oxygen membranes. Depending on the operation temperature, dopant concentration and microstructure (e.g. nanocrystalline vs. microcrystalline), the ionic transport properties of ceria can be mostly hindered by (i) grain boundaries or (ii) local atomic disorder in the bulk. Here, we present a selection of examples (ranging from thin films to ceramics) of how and to which extent these effects can affect the electrical transport properties. Emphasis will be given to the case of heavily doped nanocrystalline and microcrystalline ceria doped with samarium, erbium and ytterbium (dopant conc…

Vertigo in childhood: A methodological approach

2012

Children complaints dizziness merit meticulous evaluation to differentially diagnose a vestibular disease. A syndrome mimicking certain classic signs and symptoms of adult vestibular disorders may be presents in children, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, usually associated with aging. Benign paroxysmal vertigo, in which migraine is a manifestation, with sudden onset of dizziness is a rare peripheral vestibular disorder that is commonly ignored or misdiagnosed. This review covers the development of the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment approaches of vertigo of childhood, a valid support for physician that approach dizzy children (Ref. 25). Grain legume seed filling in relation to nitrogen acquisition: A review and prospects with particular reference to pea

2001

International audience; Seed filling depends not only on the instantaneous supply of C and N, but also on their remobilisation from vegetative organs. C supply during seed filling depends mostly on current photosynthesis, but N assimilation and N$_2$ fixation decline during seed filling, with newly acquired N generally insufficient for the high seed demand. As seeds are strong sinks for mobilised nutrients, seed growth becomes metabolically closely associated with N remobilisation. N remobilisation from vegetative tissues to filling seeds interacts with photosynthesis since it induces senescence, which reduces the seed filling period. Hence improved grain legume seed filling requires either…

Thermoelectric properties of Zn-doped Ca_(3)AlSb_(3)

2012

Polycrystalline samples of Ca_(3)Al_(1)−_(x)Zn_(x)Sb_(3), with x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, and 0.05 were synthesized via a combined ball milling and hot pressing technique and the influence of zinc as a dopant on the thermoelectric properties was studied and compared to the previously reported transport properties of sodium-doped Ca_(3)AlSb_(3). Consistent with the transport in the sodium-doped material, substitution of aluminum with zinc leads to p-type carrier conduction that can be sufficiently explained with a single parabolic band model. It is found that, while exhibiting higher carrier mobilities, the doping effectiveness of zinc is lower than that of sodium and the optimum carrier concentr…

Evaluating creep in metals by grain boundary extraction using directional wavelets and mathematical morphology

2001

Abstract It is economically important for manufacturers of high-temperature machines to be able to measure creep so that they can predict residual service life more accurately. This paper describes and refines an image analysis method for evaluating creep in laboratory test pieces. It is a preliminary study of how to extract relevant information for creep measurement by cavities counting. Sample preparation for quantification by image analysis is an important step determining the further development of the image analysis technique. Grain boundary extraction, which is directional information, is the major question to be overcome before measurement can be automated. The search for a crest-lin…

Structure and composition heterogeneity of a FeAl alloy prepared by one-step synthesis and consolidation processing and their influence on grain size…

2006

Abstract This paper aims to characterize a bulk dense FeAl (47 at.%) alloy synthesized and consolidated by one-step current-activated pressure-assisted processing of nanocrystalline elemental powders. The end-product was analyzed using a combination of scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopies (TEM), electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD) as well as electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Special attention was paid to verify the grain size (32–89 nm) previously determined by X-ray diffraction peak profile analysis. It has been found that this material displays equiaxed grains (0.8–4 μm in size) and contains limited structural defects like subgrains and dislocations. The EPMA r…

XRD microstructural analysis of mullites obtained from kaolinite–alumina mixtures

2000

Abstract A microstructural study of mullite obtained by the reaction sintering of kaolinite–α–alumina mixtures in the range 1150–1700°C has been performed by using X-ray line profile analyses together with scanning and transmission electron microscopy equipped with microanalysis by energy dispersion (SEM-EDS, TEM-AEM). Two kinds of morphology corresponding to primary (elongated grains) and secondary (equiaxed grains) mullite have been observed. A bimodal crystallite size distribution has been detected through XRD microstructural analysis from 1300°C. The results obtained by this method are compared with SEM/TEM data.

The Role of Zr in the High-Temperature Oxidation of Fe3Al

2008

The paper describes an examination of the effect of the addition of zirconium as a third element on the heat-resisting properties and explains the high temperature oxidation mechanism of Fe3Al intermetallic compounds. The Fe3Al and Fe3Al-0,05Zr specimens have been isothermally oxidized in the temperature range of 1173-1473 K in synthetic air for 100 hrs. The formed oxide layer, about 1,5-2 μm thick, was Al2O3. An examination of the cross-sectioned scales by SEM-EDS showed that the alumina layer consisted of a small inner columnar layer and an outer equiaxed grain layer. Additionally, very fine (50-150 nm) oxide grains rich in Zr, further identified as ZrO2, were found across the alumina sca…

Lifestyle recommendations for the prevention and management of metabolic syndrome: an international panel recommendation.

2017

The importance of metabolic syndrome (MetS) lies in its associated risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, as well as other harmful conditions such as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In this report, the available scientific evidence on the associations between lifestyle changes and MetS and its components is reviewed to derive recommendations for MetS prevention and management. Weight loss through an energy-restricted diet together with increased energy expenditure through physical activity contribute to the prevention and treatment of MetS. A Mediterranean-type diet, with or without energy restriction, is an effective treatment component. This dietary pattern should be built …
