In situ riboflavin fortification of different kefir-like cereal-based beverages using selected Andean LAB strains.
2018
Cereal-based functional beverages represent social, economic, and environmental sustainable opportunities to cope with emerging trends in food consumption and global nutrition. Here we report, for the first time, the polyphasic characterization of three cereal-based kefir-like riboflavin-enriched beverages, obtained from oat, maize and barley flours, and their comparison with classical milk-based kefir. The four matrices were successfully fermented with commercial starters: i) milk-kefir and ii) water-kefir, proving the potential of cereal ingredients in the formulation of dairy-like fermented beverages with milk-kefir starter behavior better in these matrices. In the light of their potenti…
EVOLUZIONE DELLA COMPOSIZIONE GRANULOMETRICA DI SABBIE POMICEE SOTTOPOSTE A COMPRESSIONE 1-D FINO AD ALTE PRESSIONI
2012
UNA PROCEDURA AUTOMATIZZATA PER LA DETERMINAZIONE DELLE CARATTERISTICHE MICROSTRUTTURALI DELLE SABBIE MEDIANTE ANALISI DI IMMAGINI DI SEZIONI SOTTILI
2012
The evolution of grain-size distribution of sands under 1-D compression
2009
Crushing of particles is a fundamental mechanisms leading to deformation of particulate materials at medium and high stresses. As crushing progresses, the grain-size distribution undergoes modifications, causing changes of the porosity, grain-to-grain contacts and of their density (”packing density” and “grain contact”). The main aim of the research is the identification of trends in the modifications of characteristic diameters (D10, D15, D25, etc.) in function of the applied stress s´v. Results of a laboratory research programme on the crushing of dry sands compressed under one-dimensional conditions, at vertical effective stresses ′v up to 120 MPa, are reported in the paper. Tests have …
Effects of voids and flaws on the mechanical properties and on intergranular damage and fracture for polycrystalline materials
2013
It is widely recognized that the macroscopic material properties depend on the features of the microstructure. The understanding of the links between microscopic and macroscopic material properties, main topic of Micromechanics, is of relevant technological interest, as it may enable the deep understanding of the mechanisms governing materials degradation and failure. Polycrystalline materials are used in many engineering applications. Their microstructure is determined by distribution, size, morphology, anisotropy and orientation of the crystals. It worth noting that also the physical-chemical properties of the intergranular interfaces, as well as the presence of micro-imperfections within…
Lactate level and handgrip test in migraine and fibromyalgia after self-myofascial release treatment
2019
The Aim of the study was to determine the effect of self-myofascial release (SMFR) treatment on handgrip test score in patients with fibromyalgia and migraine, investigating also if the lactate levels influenced the result. Twenty-five subjects affected by migraine (age 49.7±12.5; height 164.9±6.62 cm; weight 68.6±16.9 kg) and ten subjects affected by fibromyalgia (age 43.7±21.2; height 158±5.65 cm; weight 70±28.9 kg) were enrolled in the study. The assessments included a handgrip test, in order to evaluate isometric strength of both hands and forearm muscles and the lactate levels evaluation. The treatment was performed in the three most painful trigger points indicated from subjects as to…
Potential tolerability of ancient grains in non-celiac wheat sensitivity patients: A preliminary evaluation
2022
Background and aimsA wheat-free diet (WFD) represents the elective treatment for Non-celiac Wheat Sensitivity (NCWS) patients. Preliminary reports have shown a possible better tolerability of ancient grains in these subjects. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate the frequency of consumption of ancient grains and its correlation with clinical manifestations in NCWS patients.Methods223 NCWS patients were recruited, and their consumption of ancient grains was monitored. Participants were first administered a modified version of the Pavia/Biagi questionnaire to investigate their adherence to “modern WFD.” The appearance/exacerbation of symptoms after ingestion of ancient grains w…
Cortical excitability changes in chronic migraine vs episodic migraine: evidence by sound-induced flash illusions
2014
Introduction: Sound-induced flash illusions(SIFI) permit to evaluate crossmodal audio-visual perception. When one flash is accompanied by two beeps, it is perceived as two flashes(’fission’illusion); a ‘fusion’ illusion occurs when a single beep causes the fusion of a double flash stimulus. SIFI strictly depends on cortical excitability: healthy controls perceive less illusions by increasing visual cortex excitability through anodal tDCS [1]. Aim: to evaluate if, due to cortical hyperexcitability, differences in SIFI occur in migraine and further changes can be found across migraine cycle, migraine chronification an drug overuse. Methods: we enrolled 64 patients with episodic migraine, 32 w…
Chronic headache and body mass index: a case-control study.
2012
In recent years clinical research has focused on the possible role played by obesity as a risk factor for headache chronification. The aim of this case-control, hospital-based study was to evaluate: the prevalence of overweight and obesity in subjects with chronic migraine (CM) and chronic tension-type headache (CTTH); and the possible correlations between body mass index (BMI) and both headache types. Materials and methods: We studied 79 patients, 46 with CM and 33 with CTTH, consecutively referred to the Adult Headache Centre of the University of Palermo (A.H. Study) between 2007 and 2009, and 316 controls without headache (each patient was matched by sex and age to four controls). The head…
