Discontinuity as defocusing. A cognitive interpretation of the so-called discontinuous reciprocal constructions
2011
I intend to analyze a peculiar kind of reciprocal construction, in which the natural symmetry of the complex event is split due both to the defocusing of one participant (O), coded as a comitative, and the foregrounding of the other one (A), coded as a subject controlling the agreement with the verb. This construction (“discontinuous reciprocal construction”, Dimitriadis 2004), involves a “natural reciprocity” (Kemmer 1993) or “mutual configuration” (Haspelmath 2007) of the event (kissing, marring, meeting). Found in many languages, it is well attested in Italian too, both at standard level and at the informal one (1), alongside the prototypical reciprocal one (2): 1. Gianni si sposa/incont…
Gramáticas y Ortografías Españolas Preacadémicas en el Siglo xviii
1997
SUMMARYStudies on the history of Spanish grammar generally pay less attention to the period that follows the works of Gonzalo Correas and ends with the publication of the grammar of the Spanish Royal Academy (i.e., 1640-1770) than to both what precedes and what follows this period. Focusing specifically on the 18th century, the importance of the publication of the first grammar of the Royal Academy (1771) diminished interest in authors who published works on grammar during the preceding seven decades. That part of the 18th century that, from a grammatical perspective, may be called 'preacademic', is usually considered uninteresting, particularly when compared with the grammatical achievemen…
Analysis of Rabbit Vascular Responses to DBI, an Ingol Derivative Isolated from Euphorbia canariensis
1997
Abstract We have analysed the effects of 7,12-O-diacetyl-8-O-benzoil-2,3-diepiingol (DBI), an ingol derivative isolated from E. canariensis, on isometric tension developed by isolated rabbit basilar and carotid arteries. Concentration-response curves to DBI (10−8 - 3 × 10−5 m) were obtained cumulatively in both arteries at resting tension and active tone (KC1, 50 mm). At resting tension, DBI induced a concentration-dependent contraction, which was not inhibited in Ca2+-free medium. H7 (1-(5-isoquinoline sulphonyl)-2-methylpiperazine dichloride) (10−4 m) inhibited the DBI-induced contraction both in basilar and in carotid arteries. Calmidazolium (10−4 m) inhibited the maximum contraction of …

I am very pleased to review this book which ties grammar to discourse—without implying that discourse ultimately shapes grammar or has an influence on it—a book written within the Chomskyan traditi...
Word Processing in Scene Context : An Event-Related Potential Study in Young Children
2017
Semantic priming has been demonstrated in object or word contexts in toddlers. However, less is known about semantic priming in scene context. In this study, 24-month-olds with high and low vocabulary skills were presented with visual scenes (e.g., kitchen) followed by semantically consistent (e.g., spoon) or inconsistent (e.g., bed) spoken words. Inconsistent scene-word pairs evoked a larger N400 component over the frontal areas. Low-producers presented a larger N400 over the right while high-producers over the left frontal areas. Our results suggest that contextual information facilitates word processing in young children. Additionally, children with different linguistic skills activate d…
Proximal and distal. Rethinking linguistic form and use for clinical purposes.
2010
With clinical purposes in mind, a review of the proximal/distal opposition is carried out in order to define a universal parameter of variability in semiotic procedures. By taking into consideration different-although notionally inter-related-senses of the proximal/distal opposition, a cluster of semiotic properties is proposed, which initially permits one to characterize dimensions of variability in the form and use of gestures. The subsequent and central aim of this paper is, however, to demonstrate that the same, or homologous, properties can also serve to characterize variability in the use of language, by assuming a basic connection between gesturing and linguistic behaviour. The main …
”Siksi, että se tuntuu helposti opettajastakin tylsältä” : communicative methods in English grammar teaching in Finland
2015
Tutkielman tarkoitus on selvittää, miten englannin kielen kieliopin opetus on kehittynyt Suomessa viimeisten vuosikymmenten aik…

The N400 as a correlate of interpretively relevant linguistic rules: evidence from Hindi.
2009
Classical views on the electrophysiology of language assume that different event-related potential (ERP) components index distinct linguistic subdomains. Hence, left-anterior negativities are often viewed as correlates of rule-based linguistic knowledge, whereas centro-parietal negativities (N400s) are taken to reflect (non-rule-based) semantic memory or aspects of lexical-semantic predictability. The present ERP study of case marking in Hindi challenges this clear-cut dichotomy. Though determined by a grammatical rule, the choice of subject case in Hindi is also interpretively relevant as it constrains the range of possible interpretations of the subject. For incorrect subject cases, we ob…
Phrasal Verbs through the Lens of Cognitive Linguistics. A Study of Adverbial Particles in British and American Varieties through TV Crime Series
2021
This book has three main aims: (I) to determine the usefulness of English phrasal verbs for L2 learners based on their freq…
