Migrant women, work, and investment in language learning : Two success stories

Abstract In the media, migrant mothers are often portrayed as uneducated, having trouble learning a new language, and preferring to stay at home rather than entering paid employment. This article offers a contrasting point of view as a result of examining how two migrant women narrativize their experiences of language learning and working-life-related integration during a three-year period. Specific attention is paid to how the women make sense of their language use over time, and how this may have contributed to their integration into working life and the wellbeing of their families. National audience; La discrimination est analysée ici en croisant les perceptions des jeunes avec la réalité de leur insertion sur le marché du travail et de leur parcours d'éducation. Une orientation contrariée en fin de troisième a un impact sur les trajectoires ultérieures, comme l'obtention d'un emploi. Certes, le chômage est lié au niveau d'études, mais les descendants d'immigrés originaires du Maghreb ou d'Afrique subsaharienne y sont surexposés, mettant en relief une discrimination à l'embauche, discrimination vivement ressentie par les jeunes eux-mêmes.

In view of the doubts that the future of the public pension is raising and the concentration of savings in Spanish property, the reverse mortgage is once again being put on the table as a viable alternative to complement a public pension with little revaluation, in view of the increase in life expectancy and expenses after retirement.
